Position Summary

The Personal Trainer will be responsible for planning and leading a range of individualized or group exercise/activity sessions for clients in a fitness specialty area in order to assist them in establishing and reaching their fitness/wellness goals. The Personal Trainer will promote member wellness in accordance with the YMCA policies and procedures while creating a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment.

Essential Functions
  1. Design safe and effective 30‑minute to 1‑hour personal training programs for individual clients, adapting the strength training program to each person’s specific needs and abilities.
  2. Demonstrate, teach and provide individual supervision, reinforcement, and feedback to the client on safe exercise techniques during members’ training sessions.
  3. Promote Personal Training through personal example and member interaction.
  4. Maintain and practice a safe exercise and work environment for members and staff by keeping a neat, clean and pleasant environment on the Fitness Center floor.
  5. Stay current on fitness concepts and ideas.
  6. Abide by all YMCA personal trainer policies.
  7. Exemplify the core mission values of the YMCA while performing all duties.
  8. Attend scheduled Fitness Center/Personal Trainer staff meetings and complete required YMCA training.

Requirements
Qualifications
  1. Completed or currently pursuing Bachelor's degree in kinesiology or related field, or equivalent education/work experience.
  2. CPR/AED/First Aid Certification.
  3. Current ACSM, ACE, NSCA, AFAA, NASM, NETA (accredited organizations) certification in personal training.
  4. 50 to 100 hours of practical floor experience in personal training; working with free weights, or strength training equipment that includes providing an orientation to clients for individualized fitness programs.
  5. Knowledgeable and proficient with exercise equipment in Edwardsville YMCA facilities.
  6. Ability to work with beginner to advanced levels of fitness experience.
Physical Demands
  • Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions and safely supervise personal training activities.
  • Must be able to coordinate a variety of large and small tasks simultaneously and handle tension and a stress in a positive manner.
  • Must have visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to respond swiftly in an emergency situation.
