Job summary

Portage Learning seeks a part-time Personal Finance Faculty to teach a high school–level course delivered online. The instructor may grade college-level coursework in their field and will interact with students daily, monitoring progress and providing guidance.

The role emphasizes strong communication, curriculum evaluation, and collaboration with the Humanities/Academics team. Portage Learning supports flexible scheduling and distance learning excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Identify underperforming students and recommend study strategies and support services.
  • Collaborate with the Department Chair to review courses and cover vacations as needed.
  • Attend faculty/staff meetings and participate in development opportunities.

The Personal Finance Faculty will play a key role in providing excellent instruction to students through a high school-level course in Personal Finance provided by Portage Learning. The instructor may also have the opportunity to grade in college-level courses in their field.

What You’ll Invest In:

As an Instructor, you will carry out these responsibilities:

  • Teach students in assigned courses and interact with them, minimally once per day, Monday through Friday, with the exception of holidays and vacation days.
  • Grade student exams, review student modules, and review/grade student lab work (when applicable) within required timeframes.
  • Initiate substantive interactions with students and communicate effectively with students regarding their academic performance and progress in their coursework within required timeframes.
  • Answer student questions regarding course material via the integrated messaging system.
  • Identify underperforming students (students on a path to score lower than 70% in the course) and recommend practices and/or services (study strategies, increased contact with faculty via the integrated messaging system, student support services through the referral process, and outside resources, if applicable) designed to enhance student performance.
  • Support the Department Chair in periodic reviews of courses based on current best practices in distance learning and/or new developments in the field of study.
  • Collaborate with department chair to cover vacations for colleagues. Part-time faculty receive a vacation coverage stipend based upon number of days coverage is provided in a given pay period.
  • Attend faculty/staff Meetings.
  • Participate virtually or in person in at least two Faculty Development Program opportunities each calendar year.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Successful completion of a background check and currently hold and/or ability to obtain the following clearances: Child Abuse, State Police, FBI Fingerprinting, and Mandated Reporter for Child Abuse.

  • Excellent working knowledge of field of work.

This is a part-time position, which may require between 15 - 20 hours of work per week. Faculty are expected to meet all grading and communication deadlines, and are required to attend three faculty/staff meetings per year. Other in-person or virtual training may be required as well. Portage Learning typically operates Mondays to Fridays, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Travel:

The job requires occasional travel, primarily local during the business day, which may entail one or more overnight stays. Travel on one or more days of a weekend may occur occasionally.
