Job Overview

Under close supervision, assist teachers with delivering education and daily living skills curriculum, and provide personal care and assistance in daily living and personal hygiene for students in special education. Activities may include behavioral support, supervision, toileting, medical, mobility, and communication assistance.

Essential Functions

1. Assist teachers in providing instruction to students with special needs within the classroom setting.
2. Support related services such as Speech, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and others.
3. Prepare classroom materials and support instructional activities.
4. Monitor and reinforce student behavior and performance.
5. Assist students with eating, toileting, dressing, and hygiene activities.
6. Maintain a safe, clean, and organized classroom environment.
7. Communicate effectively with parents and staff.
8. Attend relevant workshops and meetings.
9. Assist with administrative tasks like copying, filing, and grading.
10. Support mobility needs, including lifting up to 50 pounds.
11. Document incidents or injuries as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Characteristics

• Knowledge of district policies, developmental delays, and special education standards.
• Skills in using sensory/therapy equipment and supporting positive behaviors.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to establish effective working relationships.

Physical Requirements

Work in indoor and outdoor environments, requiring frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Exposure to infectious diseases may occur.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Valid Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card.
• Ability to obtain CPR certification.
• One year of childcare or classroom experience, including working with students with special needs, or equivalent training.
• Fluency in Spanish and English may be required depending on district needs.
