Job summary

The City of Martinsville is seeking a Permit Technician in the Community Development Department. This on-site role, classified as Grade 9 with a non-exempt status, focuses on customer service and administrative tasks within building permits and inspections.

Qualifications

  • High school graduation or equivalent, plus related advanced courses in office management or business administration and computer software.
  • Good customer service skills with ability to listen and respond professionally.
  • Ability to maintain complex records and prepare detailed reports.

Responsibilities

  • Receives calls and greets customers; screens and refers calls as necessary.
  • Provides information on department services and responds to inquiries requiring interpretation of policies.
  • Coordinates inspection requests and schedules using the MUNIS system and calendars.
  • Issues permits, reviews contractor licensing and insurance as needed.
  • Prepares notices and maintains department files; coordinates with local utilities as needed.
  • Researches information for permits, licensing, inspections, and ownership records.
  • Performs various office duties including typing and using office equipment.
