Job summary

City of Downey's Community Development Department seeks a Building Permit Technician to assist the public with permit applications, provide information on procedures, and process forms at the service counter. You will review plans for compliance, calculate fees, and input data into permitting software.

Ideal candidates have a high school degree and at least two years of municipal permit experience, with strong communication and clerical skills. Bilingual Spanish is a plus; travel may be required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Two years of municipal permit issuance experience preferred.
• Spanish bilingual skills are highly desirable.

Responsibilities

• Assist the public at the service counter with forms, permit applications, and plans.
• Explain permit procedures and policies by phone, email, or in person.
• Review applications for compliance with codes; issue minor permits as needed.
• Calculate fees per established schedules and input data into permitting software.
• Maintain and organize plan files, permits, and related documents.
• Notify applicants when plans or permits are ready for delivery.
