Job summary

CSG Consultants is seeking a Permit Technician in California. The role focuses on front-line customer service for construction development, reviewing and processing permits, and supporting the Building Inspection Division.

Applicants should have ICC certification, 2+ years clerical experience with public contact, proficiency with MS Office, and a valid CA driver’s license. Travel to client sites may be required.

Qualifications

  • ICC Certification as a Permit Technician required within 6–12 months of hire (or 1 year with manager approval).
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Ability to utilize permitting software.

Responsibilities

  • Work with minimal supervision while providing department support.
  • Serve clients with excellent customer service and direct them to appropriate staff.
  • Provide accurate information regarding permit processes and activity.
  • Distribute and review permit applications for issuance per procedures and legal requirements.
  • Review electronic plans, blueprints, and submittals for completeness and code compliance.
  • Verify plot plans and zoning/engineering requirements.
  • Respond to public inquiries about project status.
  • Perform fee collection and ensure correct fees per jurisdiction.
  • Maintain permit applications log and plan checks for the Building Inspection Division.
  • Generate and maintain records for active permits and inspections.
  • Prepare monthly reports for Assessor’s Office and Building Standards.
  • Operate standard office equipment and software.
  • Communicate effectively with diverse individuals.
  • Maintain cooperative relationships with contacts during work.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and location.

Employees may be required to visit client locations, job sites, or other business-related locations in the course of their duties. In addition, employees may be assigned to clients whose business needs require driving as part of the employee's job responsibilities. Accordingly, employees assigned to positions requiring business-related driving must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

JOB SUMMARY

The Permit Technician performs critical tasks as front-line personnel related to customer service and construction development. This includes reviewing, accepting, distributing, processing, documenting and maintaining departmental information, reports, plans, specifications, applications, permits and related inspections according to established guidelines. Permit Technicians also provide both organizational and technical support to the Building Inspection Division staff and other departments associated with permit issuance.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Work with minimal supervision while providing department support.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, jurisdiction staff and the public.
  • Serve clients by greeting them with excellent customer service and refer them to the appropriate staff member and or educate customers on permit process when needed.
  • Provide accurate and up to date information regarding permit process and permit activity.
  • Distribute and review building permit applications for permit issuance according to dept procedures and legal requirements.
  • Review electronic plans and submittals, blueprints, submissions and plans for completeness and compliance with basic code requirements.
  • Verify structure plot plan, location on the lot, planning/zoning and engineering requirements.
  • Respond to public inquiries regarding status of submitted projects and provides information.
  • Compute mathematical, statistical and financial computations quickly and correctly, and or receive fees from Building Official, while ensuring appropriate fees are being charged based on jurisdictions adopted fees.
  • Maintain and update building permit applications log and plan checks being received by the Building Inspection Division.
  • Generate and maintain accurate record keeping system for active building permits and tracking of all inspections performed on a particular permit. Issue appropriate permits.
  • Prepare monthly reports for Assessor’s Office, Building Standards.
  • Operate standard office equipment including computers, and other related software.
  • Ability to deal effectively with difficult people with firmness and tact including people of diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to communicate well, to be able to read requirements and to hear and understand people at the counter and on the telephone.
  • Maintain cooperative working relationships with all those contacted during course of work.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Possess, or be able to obtain within six (6) months of date of hire, extension of this timeframe up to one (1) year will require manager’s approval, an International Code Council (ICC) Certification as a Permit Technician. All licenses and certificates must be maintained as a condition of employment.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in clerical involving public contact, preferably in building construction related; OR a minimum of one (1) year of experience in Permit Technician with a private or public agency.
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • Ability to utilize various permitting software.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Class "C" California driver's license with a satisfactory driving record is required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Regularly require sitting and standing for long periods of time; kneeling and squatting to retrieve materials, and lifting supply materials weighing up to 15 lbs.
  • Require the capacity to work in a fast-paced environment with deadlines and multiple projects.
  • Occasional overtime work is required throughout the year.
  • Must be able to travel to client sites and/or job sites.
Salary Range

$28 - $33.24 USD
