Job summary

University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, MS seeks a Perioperative Tech for the Surgical Suite to provide direct and indirect patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse, in accordance with policy and nursing practice laws.

Responsibilities include assisting with room turnovers, patient transportation, stocking, cleaning, equipment care, patient positioning and preparation, as well as supporting the RN with vital signs and testing; open until filled.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • One year healthcare experience preferred or first semester RN/LPN program.
  • Entry-level position for training purposes.
  • Advancement to Periop Hospital Tech II after 6 months or after certification program.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct and indirect patient care under RN guidance.
  • Assist with room turnovers, transport, stocking, cleaning, equipment care, patient positioning and preparation.
  • Support RN with vital signs, EKGs, urine pregnancy tests, Accu-checks and other duties.
  • Act as liaison with Biomedical Department; transport specimens to appropriate locations.
  • Restock supplies in pre- and post-operative areas.

Job Summary

Provide direct and indirect patient care in the perioperative area under the guidance of the registered nurse, in accordance with UMMC policy and nursing practice laws and regulations. Assist with room turnovers, receptionist duties, patient transportation, stocking, cleaning, equipment care, patient positioning, and patient preparation. Perform duties in accordance with the medical center’s purpose.

Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
  • One (1) year experience in a healthcare related occupation preferred, or completion of first semester of RN/LPN program preferred.
  • Entry‑level position for training purposes.
  • Employees may apply for Periop Hospital Tech II after 6 months of experience or completion of a certification program (such as Certified Surgical Tech Cleaner).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Effective communication skills across departments.
  • Demonstrated understanding of perioperative practice principles, including aseptic technique, infection control, traffic patterns, and patient safety.
  • Ability to assist the RN with patient care tasks such as lifting, turning, repositioning, and using proper body mechanics and equipment.
  • Knowledge of National Patient Safety Goals related to patient identification.
  • Technical proficiency with service‑specific equipment (microscopes, lasers, video equipment) and understanding of operational function, safety, cleaning, and maintenance.
  • Proper specimen handling, including packaging, preservatives, tracking, and regulatory compliance.
  • Ability to transport specimens, cultures, and labs to appropriate locations on time.
  • Act as liaison with the hospital Biomedical Department.
  • Assist with room turnover (cleaning and hazardous material disposal) and restocking supplies in pre‑ and post‑operative areas.
  • Support RN with vital signs, EKGs, urine pregnancy tests, Accu‑checks, and other assigned duties.
  • Monitor and maintain oxygen cylinders to ensure adequate supply.
Physical and Environmental Demands

Requires frequent exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environments such as high noise level and heat and cold, handling potentially dangerous equipment, exposure to biohazardous conditions including radiation, blood‑borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals. Requires frequent bending, lifting and carrying more than 100 pounds, climbing, crawling, stooping, kneeling, pushing/pulling, reaching, twisting, walking, and standing. Tasks may be performed up to 20–50% of time, with some exposure constant. Frequent traveling to off‑site locations may be required.

Full time, FLSA Designation: Non‑Exempt, Hourly Pay, 100% FTE, Work Shift: Full time.
