University of Mississippi Medical Center seeks an entry-level Periop Tech I to support direct and indirect patient care in the perioperative area under RN guidance. You will assist with room turnovers, patient prep, transporting, stocking, and equipment handling in a fast-paced surgical setting.
Qualifications include a high school diploma or GED, with one year of healthcare experience preferred or completion of RN/LPN training.
Periop Tech I
To provide direct and indirect patient care in the perioperative area under the guidance and direction of the registered nurse and in accordance with UMMC policy and nursing practice laws and regulations. To assist with room turnovers, receptionist responsibilities, transporting of patients, stocking, cleaning and maintaining supplies, equipment care, patient positioning and patient prep.
High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required. One (1) year experience in a healthcare related occupation preferred, or completion of first semester of RN/LPN program preferred. Note this is an entry‑level position for training purposes. Employees entering this job class may apply for Periop Hospital TechII with 6 months of experience or completion of a certification program (such as the Certified Surgical Tech Cleaner).

Demonstrates effective communication skills across departments. Demonstrates an understanding of principles of perioperative practice (aseptic technique, infection control, traffic patterns, patient safety) necessary to assist the RN in care of the patient (lifting, turning, repositioning), understand importance of National Patient Safety Goals, handle highly‑technical service‑specific equipment safely, assemble/clean/prep/move equipment, understand specimen handling, deliver specimens/labs, liaise with Biomedical Dept, assist with room turnover, restock supplies, obtain vital signs, monitor oxygen cylinders.
Requires frequent exposure to unpleasant environments, high noise, heat/cold, biohazards, radiation, blood‑borne pathogens, fumes, chemicals, frequent traveling, heavy lifting (>100pounds), climbing, crawling, stooping, kneeling, pushing/pulling, reaching, standing, walking, twisting. Work performed on a 100% full‑time schedule with rotating shifts.
