Qualifications

Overview

Periop Tech I (UH) – provide direct and indirect patient care in the perioperative area under the guidance of a registered nurse, in accordance with UMMC policy and nursing practice laws and regulations.

Responsibilities

• Assist with room turnovers, receptionist responsibilities, transporting patients, stocking, cleaning and maintaining supplies.
• Care for equipment, patient positioning and patient prep as directed by the RN.
• Assist with unit secretary duties, including telephone duties, appropriate message taking, and related tasks.
• Handle highly-technical service-specific equipment (microscopes, lasers, video equipment) with understanding of operation, safety, cleaning and maintenance.
• Assemble, clean and prepare or move equipment as directed.
• Demonstrate understanding of specimen handling, including packaging, preservatives, tracking and regulatory compliance; deliver specimens, cultures and/or labs as directed.
• Assist in room turnover and hazardous material disposal; restock, clean and maintain supplies in pre- and post-operative areas.
• Assist the RN in patient care activities (e.g., obtaining vital signs, EKGs, urine pregnancy tests, Accu-checks) and other duties as assigned.
• Monitor oxygen cylinders to ensure adequate supply for pre- and post-operative areas.

Education & Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
• One (1) year of experience in a healthcare-related occupation preferred, or completion of the first semester of an RN/LPN program preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Demonstrates effective communication across departments.
• Performs unit secretary duties and related tasks.
• Understands principles of perioperative practice (aseptic technique, infection control, traffic patterns, patient safety) to assist the RN in patient care.
• Understands National Patient Safety Goals related to patient identification when escorting or transporting patients and equipment.
• Handles and maintains equipment, ensuring safety and proper function.
• Assists with specimen handling, including packaging, preservatives, tracking and regulatory compliance.
• Acts as liaison with hospital Biomedical Department.

Physical and Environmental Demands

Requires frequent exposure to high-noise environments, temperature variations, and potentially dangerous equipment; exposure to biohazards, radiation, bloodborne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles; frequent travel to offsite locations; frequent movements involving lifting, bending and various body mechanics; occasional sitting; frequent standing and walking.
