Job summary

The Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking a Perioperative Registered Nurse for the VA Medical Center in East Orange, NJ. The OR RN will plan, direct, and coordinate care for patients undergoing operative and other invasive procedures, ensuring patient safety and team collaboration.

The RN acts as circulator and scrub, adheres to AORN standards and VHA SOPs, maintains sterile fields, and documents care in the electronic health record. On-call duties are required for emergency coverage.

Responsibilities

• The OR RN plans, directs, and coordinates care for patients undergoing operative and invasive procedures, maintaining respect for the patient and recognizing each team member's contribution.
• The OR RN functions in circulator and scrub roles and stays competent in all surgical specialties served.
• Maintains knowledge of AORN standards, VHA directives, and SOPs.
• Keeps the surgical field sterile and uses instruments safely; performs counting procedures to prevent retained items.
• Participates in Time Out to ensure correct site, side, and level; follows documentation and tissue-based product procedures.
• Manages specimens, administers medications safely, and protects wound perfusion at or above baseline levels.
• Documents care comprehensively in the electronic health record throughout the perioperative experience.
• Follows SOPs for reusable equipment and consults Sterile Processing or Infection Control as needed.
• Must be on-call during off tours hours for emergencies.
• Collaborates on policy development and provides feedback to peers to improve patient care.
• Fosters a safe environment for professional development and evaluates outcomes of evidence-based practice.
