Unit Overview

The Interventional Radiology (IR) Department is a high-acuity procedural unit specializing in minimally invasive image-guided procedures. IR nurses work closely with interventional radiologists, technologists, and anesthesiologists to provide high-quality care for patients undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. Patients are admitted from various hospital units, including the Emergency Department, ICU, and medical-surgical floors, requiring specialized nursing care before, during, and after procedures. This role requires the ability to work in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment, demonstrating critical thinking, adaptability, and a strong commitment to patient safety and procedural excellence. Nurses collaborate within a multidisciplinary team to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

Common Procedures & Case Types:
  1. Vascular: Angiograms, angioplasty, stent placement, thrombectomy, embolization, venous access (PICC lines, central venous catheters, dialysis catheters)
  2. Oncology: Chemoembolization, radioembolization (Y-90), tumor ablation, port placement/removal
  3. Gastrointestinal & Hepatobiliary: Biliary drainage/stenting, gastrostomy tube placement, paracentesis
  4. Genitourinary: Nephrostomy tube placement/exchange, ureteral stenting, prostate artery embolization
  5. Neurology: Stroke interventions, intracranial aneurysm coiling, carotid artery stenting
  6. Pain Management: Epidural steroid injections, nerve blocks
  7. Emergency Procedures: Trauma embolization, hemorrhage control, pulmonary embolism intervention
Special Equipment & Monitoring:
  1. Hemodynamic monitoring, telemetry, non-invasive and invasive blood pressure monitoring
  2. Moderate sedation administration and monitoring
  3. High-frequency ultrasound, fluoroscopy, CT-guided procedures
  4. Contrast media and radiation safety precautions
  5. Management of specialty drains, catheters, and vascular access devices
Special Medications & Infusions:
  1. Moderate and deep sedation agents (e.g., Fentanyl, Versed, Propofol, Precedex)
  2. Anticoagulation reversal agents (e.g., Protamine, Vitamin K)
  3. Thrombolytics (e.g., Alteplase for catheter-directed thrombolysis)
  4. Vasopressors for hemodynamic support
  5. IV contrast media and premedication protocols for contrast allergies

Job Description
Minimum Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  2. Specialty Nursing certifications.
Skills & Abilities:
  1. Possesses and applies the skills and knowledge necessary to provide care to patients throughout the lifespan, considering aging processes, development stages, and cultural patterns.
  2. Ability to provide care for a designated group of patients according to unit guidelines, hospital policies, procedures, and protocols.
  3. Skills and knowledge to provide age-appropriate care, interpret age-specific data, and communicate effectively with different age groups.
