Description

Under direct supervision of Chief PT, Assistant Chief PT, Advanced Clinician PT and/or Senior PT, provides physical therapy treatment services to hospital patients: evaluates and re-evaluates, writes treatment plans for, and treats patients suffering from physical disabilities with goals of restoring function, relieving pain, and preventing disability following disease, injury, or loss of body part. The goal is to aid patients in reaching their maximum performance while learning to live effectively within their capabilities. Teaches and supervises PTA staff, PT/PTA students, rehab aides, and volunteers, participates in patient rounds, completes all medical documents promptly, and delivers direct patient care to all age groups.

Responsibilities
  • Conducts patient diagnostic or prognostic muscle, nerve, joint, and functional ability tests to evaluate neuromuscular, cardiopulmonary, and musculoskeletal disorders, establishing parameters of disability and formulating treatment plans based on evaluation data.
  • Administers prescribed treatments such as therapeutic exercises, massage, heat, cold, light, and electricity to improve or restore functions, relieve pain, and prevent disability, following prescriptions from Physiatrists or Rehab Physicians Assistants.
  • Completes medical documentation timely, writes discharge notes, reports patient progress during team conferences, and collaborates with patients and families to plan home treatment programs.
  • Provides orientation and clinical oversight to new staff, PTAs, rehab aides, and volunteers; assists in student clinical instruction and evaluations.
  • Participates in departmental in-service and special projects, and develops therapy plans for patients with communication challenges.
  • Stays informed of current trends through literature review, conferences, and continuing education.
  • Performs other related functions as needed, working under various conditions, including indoor hospital environments and outdoor patient ambulation.
  • Works in hazardous conditions with potential exposure to biohazards and unstable behaviors in some patients.
  • Requires NYS licensure as a Physical Therapist, proficiency in inpatient evaluations, treatment, discharge planning, and good communication skills with interdisciplinary teams and patients.
Qualifications

Completion of NYS-approved physical therapy training program (Bachelor’s or Master’s level), with inpatient clinical experience, proficiency in acute care evaluations and treatment planning, NYS registration, basic computer skills, and excellent interpersonal communication skills.
