Job Description

New England Cancer Specialists (NECS) is currently seeking Per Diem RN Care Manager known internally as Nurse Navigators to work directly with physician‑led teams at Central Maine Healthcare Medical Oncology in Lewiston, ME. Experience in oncology is preferred. RNs with emergency department experience, acute‑care management, or with a strong desire to work in oncology are encouraged to apply. We are willing to train dedicated RNs who are eager to learn.

RN Care Managers/Nurse Navigators use oncology clinical knowledge to offer individualized care to patients, families, and caregivers, helping them navigate along the health‑care continuum. They carry out nursing assessments and triage patient care needs over the phone and in the office, providing advice and counsel to patients as well as advising physicians of patient needs and recommended interventions. They work collaboratively with physicians, APPs, RN peers, Patient Care Coordinators, and other clinical and non‑clinical personnel within and outside the practice.

NECS is a private medical practice composed of 18 oncologists and hematologists serving the region from six different locations in Maine and New Hampshire. Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Point of contact for referring physicians, patients, and caregivers to assist with patient scheduling and coordination of care.
  • Assist physicians and conduct patient assessments.
  • Receive patient telephone calls and intervene appropriately for that patient’s specific needs promptly; alert physician as needed to patient needs that require physician intervention.
  • Follow up with patients by telephone to ensure compliance with treatment guidelines and to evaluate changing or uncertain clinical situations.
  • Draw blood from ports, central lines, and peripheral IV access; perform other procedures as needed.
  • Ensure follow‑up appointments and tests/procedures are scheduled for patients.
  • Maintain patient care standards and ensure that patient care functions – assessment, treatment, and documentation – are completed safely and effectively.
  • Maintain open and effective communication with all physicians, employees, and vendors.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team conferences, in‑services and continuing education programs, national and regional professional organizations, and community‑sponsored programs specific to oncology and hematology.
  • Incorporate evidence‑based research into clinical practice and provide recommendations on clinical practice policies and processes to practice directors.
  • Coordinate patient care responsibilities within the scope of the practice for licensed and unlicensed health‑care providers.
  • Demonstrate respect for the life, dignity, and rights of all persons.

Travel: Rare.

Required Experience
  • Licensed Nurse within the State of Maine required.
  • 2–5 years plus nursing professional experience required.
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing preferred.
  • Two years of hematology/chemotherapy/oncology nursing experience preferred.
  • OCN certification preferred.
  • Must have ONS Chemotherapy & Bio‑therapy certification or have the ability to obtain certification within 3 months of employment, supported through the orientation process.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, and staff.
  • Must be detail‑oriented, have strong follow‑up skills, and be able to manage multiple priorities.
