Overview

The staff hospitalist must be able to competently care for the hospitalized patient throughout the hospital stay. This includes emergency evaluation and triage, admission to the hospital, and formation of a differential diagnosis. It is essential to formulate a comprehensive care plan in accordance with the most up-to-date, evidence-based protocols. The hospitalist must possess excellent communication skills, demonstrated through interactions with primary medical doctors, in-house consultant physicians, and colleagues. The hospitalist should interact professionally with all members of the patient care team, participate in education of housestaff physicians, students, nurses, and other team members, and prioritize high-quality care and patient safety, especially during transitions back to outpatient care upon discharge. Service excellence and patient satisfaction should be central to all activities. Participation in hospital committees and leadership roles is encouraged.


Responsibilities

  1. Provide direct patient care
    A. Admit adult patients to the hospital from various sources, including outpatient centers and primary care physicians.
    B. Conduct comprehensive examinations, evaluations, and make treatment decisions.
    C. Communicate effectively with primary care physicians and the care team.
    D. Provide general internal medicine consultations in various settings.
    E. Manage inpatient care across multiple specialties with appropriate subspecialty consultations.
    F. Take call as necessary for 24/7 coverage.
    G. Coordinate care with other healthcare providers.
    H. Enroll in all Managed Care plans the hospital participates in.
  2. Teach and role model
    A. Provide leadership and expertise in inpatient medical practice.
    B. Supervise and teach residents and medical students.
    C. Model excellence in patient service and communication.
    D. Lead in the use of electronic medical records and hospital information systems.
    E. Participate in educational rounds, conferences, and in-service training.
    F. Educate nursing staff on best practices.
    G. Assist in curriculum development for residency training.
    H. Complete mandatory in-services.
    I. Set and pursue professional goals.
    J. Engage in performance appraisal and accept constructive feedback.
  3. Evaluate outcomes of inpatient care
    A. Identify and address clinical practice issues to improve outcomes.
    B. Collaborate on quality improvement projects.
    C. Assess and improve clinical documentation.
    D. Contribute to research and scholarly activities.
    E. Coordinate quality improvement studies within the health system.
  4. Demonstrate leadership skills
    A. Foster relationships with primary care providers and hospital staff.
    B. Participate in development of new inpatient programs.
    C. Ensure a safe, efficient, and patient-friendly environment.
    D. Manage time effectively.
    E. Serve on hospital committees and teams.
    F. Meet hospital volume and quality goals.
    G. Maintain current knowledge through CME and professional organizations.
  5. Provide respectful and compassionate patient care
    A. Treat all patients with respect and meet their needs promptly.
    B. Show consideration for families and visitors.
    C. Remain calm and confident in stressful situations.
    D. Submit charges timely and maintain accurate medical records.
Qualifications

Education: Medical Degree (MD, DO) and completion of Internal Medicine Residency.


Experience: Inpatient care of medical patients.


Licensure: Board Certification in Internal Medicine within one year of hire.


Special Skills: Procedural skills are desirable but not required.


Physical Demands: MMR required; evidence of prior chickenpox or vaccination required; hepatitis B vaccination or declination required; Tdap and influenza vaccination encouraged. All shifts, including overnight.
