Job summary

University of Wisconsin-Madison is seeking Math Success Tutors to provide 1:1 and small-group tutoring to Scholars, with a focus on supporting first-gen, low-income, and underrepresented students. The role offers flexible scheduling and a chance to contribute to students’ academic progress.

Tutors will work 5–15 hours per week at the PEOPLE office, starting August 24, 2026. Positions include 10 openings with on-site work and a minimum starting wage of $16.00 per hour.

Qualifications

  • Interest in supporting first-gen, low-income, or other historically underrepresented scholars.
  • Experience in tutoring or learning support preferred.
  • Employment will require identity and employment eligibility verification.
  • Ability to tutor listed target courses or related coursework.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct 1:1 or small-group tutoring with assigned caseload of scholars.
  • Conduct drop-in tutoring and/or exam review sessions.
  • Develop and execute tutoring plans based on target course syllabi and materials.
  • Communicate proactively with students and program staff to ensure wrap-around support.

Department Overview

The Precollege Enrichment Opportunity Program for Learning Excellence (PEOPLE) started in 1999 with 66 high school students from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. PEOPLE has grown to serve over 1,100 students across three distinct units - Madison Precollege, Milwaukee Precollege, and the College Success Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Our precollege program is designed to help students become viable college candidates for UW-System institutions, with an emphasis on UW-Madison. PEOPLE will help college scholars progress toward graduation and ensure that the students' college experience is enriching; intellectually, socially, personally, and professionally.

Math Success Tutors will engage in 1:1 and/or small-group semester-long tutoring and/or drop-in tutoring hours that aim to:

  • Provide culturally competent tutoring that fills existing gaps in student support services.
  • Improve student retention and timely degree progress by prioritizing support for accelerated and remedial math courses.
  • Build confidence in math to directly address stereotype threat.

Schedule

Flexible. Hours are determined based on availability of tutor and student, but will remain consistent each week once agreed upon.

Qualifications

Interest in supporting Scholars from first-gen, low-income, or other historically underrepresented backgrounds.

Experience in tutoring, academic coaching, or other forms of learning support preferred.

Ability to tutor at least one of the following target courses, as showcased by B or higher in the course or related coursework. Preference given to candidates who can tutor more than one target course.
