Job summary

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's PennDOT is seeking a CDL Operator Trainee to learn highway maintenance and equipment operation statewide. You will participate in safe, hands-on tasks under supervision, gaining CDL credentials and experience on manual labor, traffic control, and routine inspections.

Full-time role with daytime hours 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday, with travel and seasonal schedule changes.

Qualifications

• Requires active Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C Driver's License or equivalent.
• Active Medical Examiner’s Certificate required by first day of work.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position focuses on learning how to operate highway construction and maintenance equipment while supporting a variety of manual labor tasks on crew assignments. As a PennDOT CDL Operator Trainee, you will perform the following duties:

• Equipment Operation: Operate trucks, loaders, and other assigned equipment safely and efficiently
• License Maintenance: Maintain required CDL credentials and complete equipment certifications during the probationary period
• Traffic Control: Perform flagging duties to support safe and effective traffic flow during work activities
• Manual Labor Tasks: Use hand tools to complete activities such as cutting brush, repairing guiderails, digging ditches, and maintaining work areas
• Equipment Care: Complete daily inspections, minor repairs, and preventative maintenance to ensure proper operation
• Safety Awareness: Follow required safety procedures and report hazards, injuries, or equipment issues promptly

Work Schedule and Additional Information

• Full-time employment
• Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
• Travel, overtime, and shift work is required. Work hours are subject to change based on seasonal requirements and operational needs.
• Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
• Salary:In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

• This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C Driver's License or equivalent.
• All positions require employees to possess an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations by the first day of work.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

• This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver Learner's Permit at the time of application.
• You must be able to perform essential job functions.
