Job summary

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's PennDOT is seeking a CDL Operator Trainee to learn operating highway construction and maintenance equipment on a full-time basis. You will train to obtain required certifications and work with a team to keep roads and bridges safe for the traveling public.

As you develop, you will perform inspections, operate trucks and loaders, and complete manual labor tasks while following safety protocols.

Qualifications

• Active Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C Driver's License on hire.
• Active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver Learner's Permit on first day.
• Medical Examiner’s Certificate required prior to start per FMCSA rules.

This position prepares you for operating highway construction and maintenance equipment while learning essential safety and work procedures. It supports your development into a fully qualified operator within the Transportation Equipment Operator classification. As a PennDOT CDL Operator Trainee, you will perform the following duties:

• Training and Licensing: Receive instruction to obtain required equipment certifications and learn proper operation procedures
• Equipment Operation: Operate trucks, loaders, and related controls while conducting necessary inspections and adjustments
• Manual Labor Tasks: Use hand and power tools to complete assigned maintenance and construction activities
• Worksite Safety: Follow safety procedures, report hazards, and help maintain a secure work environment
• Environmental Practices: Support environmental goals by participating in required training and applying responsible work methods

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

• Full-time employment
• Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
• Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
• Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $42,347.00 (before taxes).

QUALIFICATIONS

Special Requirements:

• You must be in possession of an active Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C Driver's License or equivalent.
• All employees must possess an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver Learner's Permit on the first day of work.
• All positions require employees to possess an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations by the first day of work.

Additional Requirements:

• This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
• You must be able to perform essential job functions.
