Job summary

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, PennDOT, seeks a CDL Operator to operate heavy equipment, support maintenance crews, and help keep roads in good condition. You will learn new skills, work with experienced teammates, and serve your community through daily fieldwork.

Scheduled from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday, with possible winter-hour variations and overtime. Telework is not available; salary details may vary by start date and location.

Qualifications

• Successful completion of the Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee Program or graduation from a CDL training school.
• Equivalent combination of experience and training acceptable.
• Active Pennsylvania Class A or B CDL with Air Brake Restriction removed.
• Active Medical Examiner’s Certificate and Tank Vehicle Endorsement during probation.

This position focuses on skilled equipment operation and a range of manual labor tasks that support highway and bridge upkeep. The role helps ensure safe conditions for the traveling public and dependable maintenance of state roadways. As a CDL Operator, you will perform the following duties:

• Equipment Operation:Operate trucks, loaders, and other equipment as assigned
• CDL Compliance:Maintain proper licensing and complete required equipment checks each day
• Traffic Control:Perform flagger duties when directed to support safe work zones
• Manual Labor Tasks:Carry out maintenance activities using motorized and non motorized tools
• Equipment Care:Make field adjustments, conduct minor repairs, and assist mechanics as needed
• Safety Awareness:Follow safety procedures, report incidents, and stay alert to hazards

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

• Full-time employment
• Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
• Work hours vary during winter operations
• Some overtime and travel may be required
• Telework:You will not have the option to telework in this position.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

• Successful completion of the Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee Program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
• Graduation from a Commercial Driver's License Training School; or
• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:

• All permanent employees must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders, and two additional pieces of construction equipment, within the probationary period.
• All positions require possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License or equivalent with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed.
• All positions require possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.
• All employees must obtain an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period and continuously maintain it while employed in this job.
