Qualifications

  • Must have completed at least one semester at Beaufort County Community College (BCCC) or another college/university with a 2.5 cumulative GPA.
  • Must have earned a B or better in the subjects to be tutored.
  • Preferred: tutoring experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills required.
  • Ability to work with first-generation, low-income and/or disabled students.

Responsibilities

  • Arrive punctually at scheduled tutoring sessions and drop-in hours.
  • Attend Peer Tutor Training and ongoing in-service trainings through the academic year.
  • Maintain records of tutoring activities on the Tutee Worksheet and Service Log.
  • Demonstrate academic best practices for subjects and assignments, including research and writing tactics.
  • Assist students with homework, projects, test prep, papers, and research.
  • Provide encouragement to help improve academic performance and self-confidence.
  • Provide constructive feedback to students.
  • Communicate with the Academic Support Coordinator about student progress.
  • Maintain confidentiality and respect student diversity.
  • Follow high ethical standards as a Beaufort County Community College employee.

Job description

The TRIO - SSS Peer Tutor assists students in academic success by meeting with them in individual or small group sessions, on a regular basis to clarify material, offer encouragement and assist in understand content from a specific and designated course. Other assistance provided may include; discussing texts, working on study strategies, formulating ideas for papers, working on solutions for problems or preparing for tests. The Peer Tutor has a demonstrated understanding of and experience in the course area that they are assigned based on transcript review and faculty recommendation. Hours vary according to the tutor’s availability and the number of students that need academic assistance in that course assigned to the tutor. If Peer Tutors do not have a session, they can schedule ‘drop-in’ hours for walk-in students

Minimum Qualifications

Must have completed at least one semester at BCCC or another community college or university with a 2.5 cumulative Grade Point Average. Must have received a B or better in the subjects to be tutored.

· Provide students with positive and constructive feedback

· Check email and voicemail regularly and respond in a timely manner

· Communicate regularly with the Academic Support Coordinator about student progress through bi-weekly one-on-ones

· Maintain confidentiality at all times

· Demonstrate understanding and acceptance of student diversity

· Follow the highest standard of ethical conduct as a Beaufort County Community College employee

· Assist with other duties as needed

Range

Range Peer Tutors are paid for tutoring sessions, drop-in hours, attending trainings, monthly in-service trainings and on-on-ones with the Academic Support Coordinator.
