Job summary

The Chinese-American Planning Council (CPC) is seeking an Education Specialist to support frontline staff at the PS 97 School Age Center in Brooklyn, planning, implementing, and evaluating educational activities for youth 5–12 to foster learning.

Reporting to the Program Director and Site Supervisor, you will coach staff, review lesson plans, keep records, and help meet DYCD COMPASS goals. A bachelor’s degree is required; teaching credentials and supervisory experience are a plus.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required; education/social work or related field preferred.
• Teaching credentials and elementary classroom experience a plus.
• Experience coaching and supporting staff in educational or youth settings.
• Administrative and supervisory experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Observe and evaluate activities; provide onsite coaching to staff.
• Review lesson plans; adapt curricula to goals.
• Collaborate with Program Director on engaging academic and enrichment activities.
• Maintain communications with principals, staff, parents.
• Maintain attendance records and progress reports.

PROGRAM SUMMARY

Department of Youth & Community Development/Comprehensive After School System (DYCD/COMPASS) contracts with the Chinese-American Planning Council to provide youth after school services to school-age children ages 5-12 years old. COMPASS seeks to promote positive youth development, foster social and emotional skills, and encourage youth leadership through engaging activities that incorporate hands-on learning in safe, welcoming environments. The program includes academic support, physical exercise, and enrichment age-appropriate activities such as literacy or STEM to enhance the academic, social, and physical development of children during the after-school hours, on certain evenings, weekends, and school holidays.

JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the on-site Program Director and Site Supervisor, the Education Specialist plays a critical role in maintaining program quality by supporting frontline staff with effective planning, implementation, and evaluation of educational and enrichment activities. Candidates should demonstrate a growth mindset, actively seeking opportunities for professional development and continuous improvement to support staff and enhance program outcomes.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

• Observe and evaluate program activities weekly; provide onsite coaching and training to staff to improve activity planning and delivery.
• Review lesson plans to ensure all activities align with clear learning goals and skill development; adapt curricula to meet program objectives.
• Collaborate with the Program Director to develop and implement engaging academic, enrichment, and recreational activities focused on DYCD goals, including STEM and literacy.
• Maintain effective and positive communication with school principals, staff, afterschool personnel, and parents.
• Assist with maintaining accurate records of staff and participant attendance.
• Develop and maintain participant progress reports to track learning and engagement.
• Create and utilize tools for evaluating the effectiveness of program activities and events.
• Maintain a regular schedule of staff observations, feedback sessions, and team meetings.
• Attend required meetings and trainings as directed by CPC and funding agencies.
• Meet regularly with the Program Director to discuss program needs, progress, and challenges.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Director and Site Supervisor to support program success.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree required; a degree in education, social work, counseling, or a related field preferred.
• Teaching credentials and classroom teaching experience for elementary-aged youth in afterschool or educational settings a plus.
• Experience providing staff coaching, training, and support in educational or youth development settings.
• Administrative and supervisory experience preferred.

Skills and Competencies

• Excellent verbal and written communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Strong social and emotional maturity with behavioral management skills; knowledge of positive youth development principles and ability to apply DYCD’s strengths-based approach.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
• Demonstrated growth mindset with eagerness to learn, adapt, and continuously enhance professional skills.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS OVERVIEW

• $23.00 per hour; 9 hours minimum per week
• CPC offers eligible temporary staff members mandatory benefits, including paid New York State sick time
