Summary
The Peer Recovery Specialist provides peer support and care coordination services to adults who have behavioral health needs (mental and substance use disorders). They are a member of a multi-disciplinary team designed to provide outreach, engagement, and system support. The function of the Peer Recovery Specialist is to serve as a role model, mentor, advocate, and motivator to clients, sharing personal experiences to help motivate them to seek treatment, prevent relapse, and promote long-term recovery.
Responsibilities
- Work with general outpatient and substance use disorder clients to support adults in their mental health and substance use challenges.
- Provide opportunities for individuals to direct their own recovery process.
- Coach and support the acquisition and use of skills needed to facilitate individual recovery.
- Assist clients in identifying personal strengths, abilities, needs, and in articulating recovery goals, advocating for themselves during treatment.
- Promote the use of natural resources and support systems within the community, accompanying clients to access services.
- Facilitate the development of wellness, self-worth, and personal control over life and recovery.
- Act as a role model to inspire hope, sharing life experiences and lessons learned as a person with lived experience.
- Model and mentor recovery processes and demonstrate coping skills.
- Assist in orientation for individuals new to mental health or co-occurring treatment.
- Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and competence in trauma-informed care relevant to individuals in recovery.
- Support clients in reconnecting with family, friends, and significant others, and in improving or eliminating unhealthy relationships.
- Co-facilitate meetings to nurture a peer support culture.
- Foster spiritual connections with faith-based organizations and participation in self-help and mutual support groups as requested.
- Adhere to policies and procedures for recovery-oriented treatment.
- Participate in supervision, team, department, and agency meetings.
- Maintain detailed, accurate, and timely documentation in medical records.
- Follow agency policies and standards for client rights and confidentiality.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Other Information
Qualifications:
- Individuals in personal recovery from mental health and/or substance use conditions who have used related services.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Ability to complete certification as a peer recovery specialist.
- Maintained at least 2 years of sobriety or absence of drug use.
Special Requirements:
- Be a self-identified current or former user of mental health or co-occurring services, able to relate to others who have not utilized those services.
- Communicate with supervisor about potential concerns.
- Proven proficiency in reading and writing.
- Attended relevant trainings on behavioral health, substance use, and chronic health conditions.
Job Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Valid driver's license and ability to use a car or other transportation during work hours.
- Ability to establish trusting relationships with peers.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Recognize early triggers and signs of relapse; willing to learn computer skills for recording services.
