InterCare is searching for a Full-Time Peer Recovery Coach to join our team at our Benton Harbor and Eau Claire locations! At InterCare, you’ll find a rewarding and challenging work environment and a competitive compensation. Work Schedule:

Hours are typically Monday - Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with occasional late patient activity. Days and work schedule may vary due to business need. NO WEEKENDS! NO MAJOR HOLIDAYS!

Minimum Requirements

  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Must have worked in mental health or substance abuse.
  • Experience in supporting patients with substance use disorder challenges preferred.

Primary Accountability

The Peer Recovery Coach (PRC) engages, inspires, and facilitates meaningful conversations with Patients who are part of the Substance Use Disorder (SUD) program and assists them with exploring, creating, and meeting their Recovery goals. The PRC will provide non-clinical services to aid individuals in establishing and maintaining recovery from addiction. The recovery coach promotes a recovery-based approach to member care, emphasizing respect, self-direction, and empowerment by providing peer support, personal assistance, education on community resources, and other supportive services for individuals with a substance abuse disorder (SUD).

Description of Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Provide consultation to SUD team to promote recovery culture, as defined by Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) (Recovery is defined as a process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life and strive to reach their fullest potential).

  • Draws upon own personal recovery experience with addiction challenges as a basis for engagement as a peer with members served and validate members’ own lived experiences.
  • Provide education and expertise from the perspective of a person with lived experience of Substance Use Disorders (SUD) to the team concerning various addiction recovery experiences.
  • Responsible for providing consistent communication to SUD team to evaluate patient status, ensuring that provided information, and reports clearly describe progress.

Assist with substance use disorder treatment and provide supportive services.

  • Facilitate groups as needed.
  • Consistently utilizes recovery language and a strength-based approach to assist members served to reach their fullest potential.
  • Help develop and practice skills which are needed to achieve goals outlined in the treatment plan for maintaining personal wellness.
  • Models and teaches effective coping techniques and self-advocacy strategies.
  • Participates in verbal de-escalation interventions in emergent situations and is willing and able to assist other staff as needed to maintain a safe, healing environment for all.
  • Act as a patient advocate and liaison between patient and community service agencies (i.e. schools, Department Human Services, hospitals, support groups, etc.)
  • Complete screening for Alcohol and SUD disorders.
  • Works closely with Medical Assistants, Mental Health and SUD staff, and Medical Providers by communicating results of screening and facilitating appropriate follow-up/next steps.

  • Must have personal experience with a substance use disorder and have used substance use disorder services.
  • Knowledge and skills sufficient for establishing effective relationships with individuals who have substance use disorders.
  • Willing to understand Patient’s unique circumstances, personal preferences and goals along with the ability to incorporate them into daily work.
  • Completion of the Certified Addiction Recovery Coach (CPRC) certification or willing to complete.
  • Experience facilitating recovery groups.
  • Must have knowledge of recovery support systems, including but not limited to, 12-step support groups; and providing direct service.
  • Must have experience and/or a working knowledge of the criminal justice system.

Technical Skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to present educational information to patients one-on-one or in group settings.

Communication Skills

  • Possesses a professional level of written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate in a clear effective manner.
  • Possesses excellent cross cultural communication skills and the ability to communicate to patients and co-workers at all levels.
  • Fluent in Spanish and English, reading, writing, and speaking skills preferred.

Physical Demands

Job duties are performed in the typical office environment of the organization, which requires ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations. The environmental factors and/or physical requirements of this position include the following:

  • Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, frequently sit, and lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Requires ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations.
  • Frequent travel between assigned InterCare locations using reliable personal vehicle.
  • Requires good hand-eye coordination, reach with arms & hands, and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and manipulate (using keyboard, office equipment).
  • Visual acuity to use keyboard, operate office equipment, and read printed material and regularly required to talk and hear.
