Job summary

Thomas Young Group in San Diego, CA seeks a Senior Structural Engineer (Forensics) to investigate failures and support litigation across diverse projects. You will collaborate with legal and insurance teams to document conditions and determine causes using established codes and engineering practices.

The role requires a California-licensed PE with 10+ years of structural engineering experience, proficiency across steel, concrete, masonry, wood, and building envelopes, and strong report-writing

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Architectural Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
• Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in California (multi-state licenses or ability to obtain is a plus).
• 10+ years of structural engineering experience in design or related areas.
• Experience with steel, concrete, masonry, wood, roofing, and building envelopes.
• Strong knowledge of national building and construction codes (ICC, ASCE, AISC, ACI, NDS, etc.).

Responsibilities

• Conduct field assessments to document conditions and damage to structural systems caused by natural or human-related events.
• Investigate structural failures, including design flaws, construction defects, and improper material use.
• Apply building codes and structural engineering principles to determine repair scope and cause-of-failure analyses.
• Review design drawings and assess compliance with codes and standards.
• Prepare detailed technical reports and communicate findings to clients.
