Job summary

U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Justice seeks a LAN/WAN Technician to manage PBX, IVR, and WWW presence for the unit. This role configures WAN/LAN equipment, backs up data, troubleshoots network issues, and coordinates maintenance while maintaining confidential relations with policy makers.

Qualifications

Job description

Under the general supervision of the Director of Management Information Systems (MIS), the PCSD LAN/WAN Technician is responsible for the Phone Branch Exchange (PBX), Interactive Voice Response Unit (IVR), Telecommunications, and World Wide Web (www) presence for the unit. The PCSD LAN/WAN Technician manages these systems to ensure proper operation, to troubleshoot system problems, to generate problem reports, and to coordinate maintenance whenneeded. The incumbent is responsible for resolving any system issues. This position requires a confidential relationship to the policy maker.

DUTIES (NOT ALL INCLUSIVE)

  • Backs up network data.
  • Configures security settings or access permissions for groups or individuals.
  • Analyzes and reports computer network security breaches or attempted breaches.
  • Identifies the causes of networking problems, using diagnostic testing software and equipment.
  • Documents network support activities.
  • Configures wide area network (WAN) or local area network (LAN) routers or related equipment.
  • Installs network software, including security or firewall software.
  • Troubleshoots network or connectivity problems for users or user groups.
  • Provides telephone support related to networking or connectivity issues.
  • Evaluates local area network (LAN) or wide area network (WAN) performance data to ensure
  • sufficient availability or speed, to identify network problems, or for disaster recovery purposes.
  • Analyzes network data to determine network usage, disk space availability, or server function.
  • Performs routine maintenance or standard repairs to networking components or equipment.
  • Configures and defines parameters for installation or testing of local area network (LAN), wide
  • area network (WAN), hubs, routers, switches, controllers, multiplexers, or related networking equipment.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

FACTOR 1- KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Knowledge of circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming.
  • Knowledge of transmission, broadcasting, switching, control, and operation of telecommunications systems.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services.
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.
  • Knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods. This includes alternative ways to inform and entertain via written, oral, and visual media.
  • Ability to effectively work independently.

FACTOR 2- SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The incumbent receives general instructions from the Director of Management and Information Systems (MIS). He/she is expected to perform independently within the guidelines of the agency.

FACTOR 3- GUIDELINES

Guidelines include manuals on legal procedures as outlined for the USVI, the Virgin Islands Code, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for the Agency for the Paternity and Child Support division, and technological processes.

FACTOR 4- COMPLEXITY

This is professional IT work involving troubleshooting and repairing information technological matters that requires various work methods.

FACTOR 5- SCOPE AND EFFECT

The purpose of work is to facilitate the effective performance and equip the Paternity and Child Support division staff with the tools to ensure timely processing of all paternity matters.

FACTOR 6- PERSONAL CONTACTS

Contacts are with co-workers and vendors.

FACTOR 7- PURPOSE OF CONTACTS

Contacts are made to troubleshoot IT related problems and make the necessary adjustments.

FACTOR 8- PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work is primarily sedentary with occasional walking, standing, bending and transferring documents.

FACTOR 9- WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in an office setting; however, some travel may be required.

MINIMUM QUALFICATIONS

Bachelor of Arts degree in Information Technology, Computer Science or a closely related field supplemented by four (4) years of related experience.

OR

Associates degree in Computer Science or a closely related field supplemented by six years of experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Possession of a valid driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle in the US Virgin Islands.
