Job summary

Personal Care Attendants assist senior adults who are functionally, physically, and/or socially impaired. The Personal Care Attendant’s role is to assist residents with those activities of daily living that they are unable to perform without help, fostering at all times residents’ independence and freedom of choice. All responsibilities will be conducted in a manner that is consistent with the philosophy of St. James Place (SJP).

In addition to all responsibilities of a PCA, the PCA Team Leader serves as a mentor to the PCA staff, providing guidance and motivation and ensuring the quality of care to the residents. May perform duties specific to certain shifts in order to enhance performance of the PCA staff. The PCA Team Leader/Scheduler will ensure staff scheduling and shifts are adequately covered.

EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Previous experience with personal care in a healthcare or home care setting
  • Current CPR/First Aid Certification (or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment)
  • Basic computer usage skills; ability to learn software programs related to position
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • PCA Team Leader/Scheduler will ensure morning care is fulfilled, including toileting at designated time.
  • Responsible for monitoring dining room settings as well as serving.
  • Mentors PCA staff; leads by example.
  • Ensures that shifts are adequately staffed; schedules and communicates staffing assignments.
  • Handles call-ins and coordinates replacement coverage; when unable to secure replacement PCA coverage, PCA Team Leader/Scheduler may be required to work the PCA assignment.
  • Encourage activity participation by issuing a personal invitation to the residents.
  • Refresh hydration stations at the beginning of each 8-hour shift.
  • Attend outings with residents, including doctor appointments.
  • Remain visible at all times to assist where needed.
  • Maintain order and professionalism of staff throughout the shift.
  • Report staffing issues or resident care issues to a member of management.
Personal Care
  • Provides assistance with dressing and undressing.
  • Provides assistance with bathing.
  • Provides assistance with personal hygiene.
  • Provides assistance with mobility devices (cane, walker, wheelchair, crutches) including monitoring of safe transfer and ambulation techniques.
  • Care for ADL devices such as eyeglasses, contact lenses, hearing aids and dentures.
  • Provides assistance with telephone (assists with calls, telephone repairs, hearing and vision adaptive skills).
  • Provides assistance with housekeeping tasks associated with personal care such as washing dishes, bed making, cleaning bathroom and linen/towel changes, as well as doing resident’s personal laundry.
  • Assists residents with self-administration of medications.
  • Monitors medication supplies and documentation.
  • Assists with escorting residents to the Dining Room for meals
  • Assists with preparing the Dining Room for meals (setting tables, clearing tables, cleaning dining room & dishes when necessary).
  • Assists with taking meal orders and waiting tables during mealtimes.
  • Assists with planning and preparing for activities.
  • Assists with reminding and escorting residents to activities.
  • Participates in scheduled and unscheduled activities.
  • Assists with clean up after scheduled activities.
Health Maintenance and Monitoring Tasks
  • Observes and reports changes in resident’s physical condition and cognitive/emotional status to the Director of AL or Wellness Nurse.
  • Conducts room checks and resident rounds.
  • Monitors for environmental safety hazards.
  • Reports and records incidents, errors, or accidents.
  • Reports and records resident and resident-related events.
  • Promotes residents’ social, physical and emotional wellbeing.
Leadership/Team Building
  • Demonstrates and reflects the mission and values of St. James Place.
  • May participate in the interview process for new staff; assists with training and orientation of new employees and ensures that training is documented.
  • Plans and completes duties with minimal direction from supervisor.
  • Works collaboratively with peers and other team members.
  • Uses tactful, diplomatic communication techniques at all times.
  • Follows up with appropriate staff, residents, or other individuals regarding reported complaints, problems, and concerns, and communicates these to the Director of AL.
  • Acts as ambassador and public relations representative to guests and other off-campus visitors.
Work Hours
  • Must be able to work flexible hours and participate in holiday activities.
  • May require working long hours or hours outside of the normal work week.
  • MAY BE DESIGNATED ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL IN THE EVENT OF EMERGENCY SITUATIONS, INCLUDING HURRICANES, EVACUATION, FIRE, FLOOD, ETC., AND BE REQUIRED TO REMAIN ON CAMPUS FOR THE DURATION OF THE EMERGENCY.
