Job summary

Riverside Health in Gloucester, Virginia is seeking a Patient Care Assistant to support registered nurses in daily patient care, wound care, basic phlebotomy, and EKG procedures. You will document patient data in the EMR accurately and help maintain a safe, clean environment for all patients.

Under RN supervision, you will follow care plans, monitor vital signs, assist with admissions and transfers, and support a range of tasks across age groups to ensure high-quality care and patient safety.

Qualifications

• 1 year prior health care experience in a hospital setting (Preferred).
• CPR/BLS Certification required at hire.
• One of the following is required: CNA, EMT-B, CMA/RMA, or currently enrolled in LPN/RN program with at least 80 hours completed.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrate understanding of the technology systems necessary for patient data collection into EMR.
• Follow plan of care to include performing treatments and procedures competently/independently under direction of RN, including vital signs, ice application, compresses, EKGs, drawing blood, specimen collection, etc.
• Accurately complete all required clinical and quality documentation consistently per RHS standards and regulatory requirements.
• Ensure availability of resources (equipment, instruments, supplies) and maintain clean, safe and orderly work/patient environment.
• Take direction from the charge nurse to help admit, discharge, or transfer patients in a timely and efficient manner.

Hiring Range

$16.80 - $21.83/Hourly. Actual pay is determined based on job‑related factors such as relevant experience, education, credentials, skills, internal equity, and business needs.

Overview

Works under the supervision of Registered Nurse, Nurse Manager/Director in personal care of the patients and their environment (including those needing special precautions) and performs specified functions in tasks where there is validated competency including: simple wound care (i.e. cleaning of abrasions/laceration), EKGs, peripheral INT removal, basic phlebotomy, and extremity splinting. In addition, this position must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served in assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and provide the care needed as described according to the departmental policy and procedure. Promotes and maintains safe work environment for staff as well as our customers, incorporating national patient safety initiatives.

Licenses and Certifications

• CPR/BLS Certification - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/American Safety and Health Institute (AHA/ARC) Upon Hire (Required)
• One of the following is required:
  • Certified Nurse Aid (CNA) - Virginia Department of Health Professions (VDHP)
  • EMT-B (Basic) from the Virginia Department of Health Professions or National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians
  • Certified or Registered Medical Assistant (CMA/RMA), or Medical Assistant Program Graduate
  • Currently enrolled in LPN or RN diploma or degree program with at least 80 hours completed
