Job summary

Los Angeles Community Hospitals is seeking a PBX Operator to manage incoming calls, direct extensions, and assist with paging in a fast-paced hospital setting. You will monitor alarm panels and relay critical messages with accuracy.

Responsibilities include maintaining phone, extension, and pager lists, paging codes and emergencies, and ensuring a professional, attentive approach to patients, families, and staff while upholding safety procedures.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Must be able to read, write and communicate effectively in English.
  • Understanding of basic medical terminology.
  • Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload.
  • Ability to multitask.

Responsibilities

  • Operates telephone switchboard to relay incoming, outgoing, and inter-office calls in a timely, accurate, and professional manner.
  • Maintains an alphabetical file of patients’ names, room number, and telephone extensions to expedite relaying of calls.
  • Pages authorized personnel over the intercom system. Announces close of visiting hours and other notifications.
  • Records all pertinent information regarding the hospital’s telephone network system and notifies telephone carrier and supervisor of any issues and/or malfunctions.
  • Pages all codes and emergencies and follows proper procedure as established in Fire and Safety Manual and Disaster Plan.
  • Maintains communications center in the event of a Fire and/or a Disaster.
  • Demonstrates appropriate use of independent judgement and decision making. Demonstrates excellent customer service at all times.
  • Ensures the work area is clean, clutter free, and organized.

Position Summary

The PBX Operator answers and directs all incoming calls, assists with outgoing calls, internals calls, and overhead paging. Monitors alarm panels, performs various alarm testing, calls codes (red, blue, yellow). Maintains and updates internal phone, extension, and pager lists.

Preferred Qualifications
  • One year of previous PBX experience
  • Bilingual skills to communicate effectively with patients and families
  • Previous experience working in a hospital
