Job summary

Verstela, based in Illinois, seeks a Payroll & Accounting Specialist to support payroll across multiple states and entities, and to assist with client billing, invoicing, and accounts payable.

You will work in a fast-paced environment, adapting to evolving processes and leveraging AI-supported systems and advanced Excel to ensure accuracy and actionable payroll insights.

Qualifications

• At least 3 years of payroll and accounting experience.
• Experience with multi-state payroll.
• Excellent Excel skills including PivotTables and lookups (XLOOKUP, VLOOKUP).
• Comfort with AI-supported systems and evolving technology.
• Analytical, problem-solving mindset and ability to resolve issues.

• Review payroll data, identify discrepancies, and troubleshoot before impacting employees.
• Partner with internal teams to research and resolve payroll questions.
• Manage client billing and invoicing, ensuring accuracy and timely processing.
• Support Accounts Payable, reviewing and processing invoices and resolving discrepancies.
• Use Excel and payroll systems to review, organize, and analyze payroll data.
• Work with AI-supported systems to improve payroll efficiency.

About the Role

As a Payroll & Accounting Specialist, you’ll play an important role in supporting both payroll and accounting operations across multiple states and business entities. You’ll be responsible for accurate payroll processing while also supporting client billing, invoicing, and accounts payable.

You’ll work in a fast-paced environment where priorities and processes continue to evolve, so we’re looking for someone who is comfortable with change, learns quickly, and enjoys solving problems. This role is a strong fit for someone who brings solid payroll experience along with accounting knowledge and is ready to take a more analytical approach to their work.

You will:

• Process high-volume payroll accurately and on time across multiple states and business entities.
• Review payroll data, identify discrepancies, and troubleshoot issues before they impact employees.
• Partner with internal teams to research and resolve payroll-related questions.
• Manage client billing and invoicing, ensuring accuracy and timely processing
• Support Accounts Payable, including reviewing and processing invoices and resolving discrepancies.
• Use Excel and payroll systems to review, organize, and analyze payroll information.
• Work with AI-supported systems and new technology designed to improve payroll processes and efficiency.

You have:

• At least 3 years of payroll and accounting experience.
• Experience processing high-volume, multi-state, and multi-entity payroll.
• Strong Excel skills, including experience with PivotTables and lookup functions such as XLOOKUP and VLOOKUP.
• Strong attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.
• Comfort working with AI-supported systems and evolving technology.
• An analytical, problem-solving mindset and the ability to look beyond task completion to understand and resolve issues.
• The ability to adapt to ongoing changes in processes, priorities, and business needs.

Schedule: Hybrid, with 4 days in the office and 1 day working from home.

The standard rotating schedule includes 4 days from 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. and 1 day from 10:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m. CT. We are also open to someone who prefers a consistent 10:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m. CT schedule.
