Position Title: Payroll Specialist
Reporting to: Controller
Location: 501 W Franklin St, Chapel Hill, NC (In Office)
Compensation: $60,000-$64,000, depending on experience, plus bonus potential and benefits
Well is seeking a detail‑oriented, highly organized, and dedicated Payroll Specialist to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring the accurate and timely processing of payroll for our growing, multi‑state workforce. You will serve as the primary point of contact for all employee payroll inquiries, maintaining strict compliance with state and federal tax regulations and internal policies. This role sits at the intersection of our Finance and HR teams, ensuring our most valuable asset—our people—are supported seamlessly behind the scenes.
Given the importance of supporting onsite team members in Well’s operations center along with integrating closely with other administrative functions, the Payroll Specialist is expected to be onsite daily in the company’s Chapel Hill location.
Manage end‑to‑end multi‑state payroll operations on a bi‑weekly & semi‑monthly basis for all exempt and non‑exempt employees through our HRIS/Payroll platform.
Accurately process all payroll inputs including new hires, terminations, salary adjustments, variable pay (bonuses/commissions), garnishments, and retroactive payments.
Collaborate closely with the HR team to ensure accurate capture of benefits deductions, 401(k) contributions, and leave‑of‑absence calculations.
Support Accounting via GL Mapping updates and reconciliations.
Maintain compliance with local, state, and federal labor laws and tax regulations.
Monitor tax agency notices and work with our payroll vendor to resolve tax discrepancies quickly.Support various audit requests for payroll data
Generate W2 & 1099 statements from HRIS/Payroll platform for review.
Act as the first line of support and subject matter expert for all internal payroll inquiries.
Respond empathetically and clearly to employee questions regarding pay, taxes, and deductions.
Partner with line managers to support timely submissions of time cards.
High emotional intelligence & exceptional communication skills combined with maturity and discretion
Proficiency with payroll/HRIS platforms (UKG experience is a plus).
