Job summary

Check is seeking a Payroll Support Manager to lead a team resolving complex payroll issues for embedded payroll users. You will set priorities, coach the team, manage capacity, and coordinate with a senior SME to apply expertise effectively.

You don't need to be a payroll expert initially; you must learn quickly, decide when to consult specialists, and build durable systems with cross-functional partners across Support, Filing, Tax Operations, Product, and R&D.

Qualifications

• 4–6+ years in operations, technical support, or a similarly execution-heavy environment.
• Meaningful people management experience with clear standards for outcomes and how work gets done.
• Strong ability to balance priorities, SLAs, customer impact, and risk.
• Proven track record of hiring and growing teams around metrics.
• Excellent translating complex concepts to executives and non-technical audiences.

Responsibilities

• Own the team's day-to-day operating rhythm, including priorities, queue health, resource allocation, standups, escalation paths, and SLA performance.
• Manage and develop a team of experienced payroll operations specialists through coaching and performance management.
• Create visibility into team performance and surface risks, bottlenecks, and emerging trends.
• Partner with the team's senior SME to turn technical expertise into repeatable processes and documentation.
• Own complex operational escalations and coordinate with cross-functional partners when needed.
• Collaborate with leaders across Support, Filing, Tax Operations, Product, and R&D on cross-functional issues.
• Serve as a thought partner to the head of the department on strategy, staffing, and performance.
