Job summary

Watu is seeking a Tech Lead for Payments Engineering to own the architecture and drive technical direction across a critical squad. You will manage 4–6 engineers, enforce standards, and collaborate with Product to ensure feasible roadmaps.

You will lead on payment provider integrations, reconciliation tooling, and security practices, while shaping delivery, quality, and observability across systems.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of software engineering experience with a track record as a technical authority for a significant product area or team.
• Strong backend engineering fundamentals: distributed systems, event-driven architecture, API design, database design, and testing strategy.
• Proven ability to review and reason about code across the full stack of your domain and provide meaningful PR feedback.
• Experience in an Agile/Scrum or Kanban environment working with a Product Owner.
• Clear, direct communicator with engineers, Product, and leadership.

Responsibilities

• Own the technical architecture for your squad's domain, including system design, API contracts, data models, and ADRs.
• Enforce engineering standards within your squad: GitHub, PR reviews, test coverage gates, OpenAPI docs, runbooks, and secrets management.
• Represent the squad to Platform Architecture, aligning patterns with the platform direction.
