Spear D Construction in Albuquerque, NM is seeking a dependable Paving Laborer – Tech I to join our asphalt paving crews. This entry-level role supports daily paving operations under a Foreman, focusing on safety and learning.

You will perform surface prep, asphalt placement, grading, and site cleanup, work with hand tools, and follow company procedures and OSHA guidelines. Training and growth opportunities are available in a collaborative environment.

Competenze

• Entry-level position; previous paving experience is not required.
• Willingness to learn asphalt placement, grading, compaction, and paving techniques.
• Ability to perform physically demanding outdoor work.
• Strong teamwork and communication skills.
• Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record if assigned a company vehicle.

Mansioni

• Assist paving crews with asphalt placement, leveling, and minor grading work.
• Prepare surfaces for paving, including sweeping, cleaning, and applying tack coat.
• Use hand tools such as shovels, rakes, brooms, picks, sledgehammers, and paving lutes.
• Rake asphalt in corners and tight areas to achieve proper grade and smoothness.
• Safely operate basic power tools, including plate compactors, jumping jacks, cut-off saws, blowers, and drills.
• Assist with traffic control and flagging activities as needed.
• Collect load tickets and help direct asphalt and material deliveries.
• Assist with marking offsets for manholes, valves, and underground utilities.
• Support potholing and utility exposure before patch preparation.
• Assist with fueling, lubrication, and cleaning of paving and grading equipment.
• Maintain clean, organized, and safe jobsites, tools, and company vehicles.
• Follow directions from Foremen and experienced crew members.
• Follow OSHA, NM811, and company safety procedures, including daily Pre-Task Planning (PTP) meetings.

Job Description

Spear D Construction is seeking a dependable, hardworking, and motivated Paving Laborer – Tech I to join our asphalt paving crews.

This entry-level position supports daily asphalt paving operations, including surface preparation, asphalt placement, grading, and jobsite cleanup. Working under the direction of a Paving Foreman and experienced crew members, the Paving Laborer will help ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and according to company standards.

The ideal candidate enjoys hands-on work, follows instructions, works well with a team, and is eager to learn and develop skills in asphalt paving and heavy civil construction.

Job Responsibilities

• Assist paving crews with asphalt placement, leveling, and minor grading work.
• Prepare surfaces for paving, including sweeping, cleaning, and applying tack coat.
• Use hand tools such as shovels, rakes, brooms, picks, sledgehammers, and paving lutes.
• Rake asphalt in corners and tight areas to achieve proper grade and smoothness.
• Safely operate basic power tools, including plate compactors, jumping jacks, cut-off saws, blowers, and drills, as trained and authorized.
• Assist with traffic control and flagging activities as needed.
• Collect load tickets and help direct asphalt and material deliveries.
• Assist with marking offsets for manholes, valves, and underground utilities.

Job Requirements

• Willingness to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a crew.
• Strong attention to safety and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Ability to communicate effectively with crew members and supervisors.
• Dependable attendance, punctuality, and a positive attitude.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Ability to work overtime or weekends as needed.

Qualifications

• Entry-level position; previous paving experience is not required.
• Previous asphalt paving, grading, construction, or general labor experience is a plus.
• Basic knowledge of hand tools and construction equipment preferred.
• Willingness to learn asphalt placement, grading, compaction, and paving techniques.
• Ability to perform physically demanding work in outdoor construction environments.
• Strong teamwork and communication skills.
• Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record if assigned a company vehicle.
