Job Description

Spear D Construction is seeking an experienced, dependable, and hands-on Paving Foreman to lead asphalt paving crews on construction projects. This position oversees daily paving operations, coordinates crews, equipment, trucking, and materials, and ensures work is completed safely, efficiently, and according to project plans and specifications.

The ideal candidate is a strong leader with extensive asphalt paving experience, excellent crew management skills, and a commitment to safety, productivity, and quality workmanship.

Job Responsibilities

• Supervise and direct paving crews to meet daily production, quality, and safety goals.
• Oversee asphalt paving operations, including mix selection, placement, raking, rolling, and compaction.
• Operate and oversee laydown machines, asphalt elevators, steel and pneumatic rollers, grade tractors, and related equipment.
• Read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and performance requirements.
• Ensure asphalt placement meets compaction, smoothness, and joint specifications.
• Calculate asphalt quantities, including converting square footage into tons, to minimize waste.
• Coordinate trucking, asphalt suppliers, and material deliveries to maintain production schedules.
• Track daily production quantities and crew hours using iPads and Viewpoint systems.
• Direct crews performing asphalt patching, repairs, tack coats, fog seals, flush seals, and other asphalt treatments.
• Ensure prepared grades are protected before and during paving operations.
• Communicate effectively with Superintendents, Project Managers, inspectors, vendors, and crew members.
• Train, mentor, and hold crew members accountable for performance, productivity, and quality.
• Ensure equipment, tools, and assigned vehicles are properly maintained, inspected, and secured.
• Conduct daily safety meetings, Stretch & Flex, and Pre-Task Planning (PTP).
• Ensure compliance with OSHA, NM811, and company safety procedures.
• Maintain clean, organized, and safe jobsites.

Job Requirements

• Extensive knowledge of asphalt paving operations, materials, and installation techniques.
• Strong understanding of hot and cold mix asphalt, Performance Grade (PG) mixes, compaction, smoothness, and joint requirements.
• Proven ability to supervise, lead, and develop paving crews.
• Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and production reports.
• Experience operating and coordinating paving and compaction equipment.
• Ability to calculate asphalt quantities and coordinate trucking and material deliveries.
• Ability to track production, labor hours, and job progress using iPads or similar technology.
• Strong communication, organization, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
• Knowledge of OSHA regulations, NM811 requirements, and safe paving practices.
• Ability to work extended hours or weekends as needed.
• Dependable attendance, professionalism, and commitment to quality workmanship.

Qualifications

• Proven experience as a Paving Foreman, Asphalt Foreman, Paving Crew Leader, or similar supervisory role.
• Extensive hands-on experience in asphalt paving, compaction, patching, and surface treatments.
• Previous experience supervising paving crews and coordinating asphalt construction activities.
• Experience operating laydown machines, asphalt rollers, and other paving equipment.
• Strong understanding of asphalt materials, grades, compaction standards, and quality requirements.
• Experience with labor tracking, production reporting, and mobile technology.
• OSHA-30 and applicable excavation and equipment-operation safety training or certifications.
• Strong leadership skills with the ability to train and develop crew members.
• Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record if assigned a company vehicle.
