Pay range for position: $47.00-$60.00 per hour
Under the general direction of the Chief of Police, supervises law enforcement activities of sworn or civilian subordinate personnel and performs the full range of police duties as necessary.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Works on rotating shifts, supervising police officers and other assigned staff in their duties.
- Supervises the scheduling and coordinating of shift changes.
- Reviews police-related reports prepared by subordinate officers or others for completeness and accuracy.
- Supervises and evaluates officers' arrests based on circumstances and evidence.
- Makes day-to-day assignments as required by the needs of the department.
- Develops tactical plans for operations and investigations, including new approaches to crime solving and community issues.
- Notifies the Patrol Lieutenant and the Chief of Police of major crimes or high-profile incidents.
- Maintains contact with police personnel, the public, court officials, and other city officials regarding police activities.
- Supervises and directs activities of assigned staff, makes recommendations regarding hiring, discipline, termination, or advancement, and conducts performance evaluations.
- Ensures effective utilization of manpower and resources to solve crimes, reduce criminal activity, and improve safety.
- Reviews, approves, and submits reports and documents from officers.
- Monitors and approves time reporting and leave requests for officers.
- Provides interpretation and guidance on policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and laws.
- Provides briefings to personnel on current issues.
- Maintains records of material, equipment, and vehicle usage and maintenance.
- Performs field duties including responding to calls, intervening in disputes, investigating cases, writing reports, issuing citations, and making arrests.
- Testifies in court as required.
- May write grants for funding police programs and equipment needs.
- Represents the department in community events and meetings, and attends professional organization meetings.
- Orders equipment and supplies as needed.
- Adheres to safety precautions to prevent accidents and ensures safety of self, others, and materials.
- Assists the Chief with implementing departmental policies and procedures.
- Undertakes community-oriented policing initiatives and holds subordinates accountable for service delivery.
- Coordinates crime prevention and community policing activities.
- Performs related duties as required by the Chief of Police, including overtime work.
- May supervise special programs or teams such as the Firing Range or Field Training Officer Program.
Job Qualifications Requirements
The following are the required knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Working knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, equipment, and applicable laws.
- Ability to analyze police concerns and make recommendations.
- Knowledge of pursuit driving policies and arrest control procedures.
- Ability to qualify quarterly for firearms proficiency.
- Working knowledge of computers and ability to write conformant correspondence.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with employees, agencies, and the public.
- Proficiency in current technology and software applications related to law enforcement.
