Job summary

Suffolk University is seeking Patrol Officers to join the Police and Public Safety Department. Officers partner with the campus community to maintain a safe environment, enforce laws, and protect students, staff, and guests.

Responsibilities include responding to emergencies, patrolling campus, and preparing reports. Required duties include enforcing university rules, conducting investigations, providing testimony when needed, and working flexible hours including nights and weekends.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 21 years old.
• Must be a US Citizen or a Naturalized US Citizen.
• Must possess a high school diploma or HiSET.
• Must be able to obtain MA License to Carry Firearms (Class A) per MA law.
• Must possess ethical behavior, emotional stability, sound judgment and integrity.
• CPR and First Aid certifications preferred but not required.
• No prior felony record.
• Valid driver's license or ability to obtain one prior to hire.
• Complete MPTC basic Police Recruit Academy and obtain SSPO and Suffolk County Deputy Sheriff powers.
• Ability to pass training and proficiency in department equipment and weapons.
• Possess MA POST Certification and pass background checks.

Suffolk University is pleased to announce immediate openings as a Patrol Officer with the Police and Public Safety Department. Patrol Officers work in partnership with the Suffolk University community they serve to ensure a safe and secure environment, maintain order, protect students, faculty, staff, and guests, prevent crime, protect buildings and properties, reduce the fear of crime, and improve the overall quality of life for the entire Suffolk University community.

Primary/Principal Responsibilities

• Provide emergency assistance, perform community relations and conflict resolution.
• Prevent and deter crime, enforce laws, secure crime scenes, investigate crimes, gather evidence, and take statements in compliance with relevant statutory and constitutional legal requirements.
• Enforce Suffolk University rules and regulations.
• Respond to calls for assistance, providing walking escorts to university buildings, banks, MBTA stations, parking garages, or other locations as directed by a supervisor.
• Administer first aid and CPR to the officer’s appropriate level of training.
• Respond to alarms, maintain fire watch, and handle emergency evacuations.
• Interior and exterior patrol of buildings and property by foot, bicycle, or vehicle.
• Prepare and submit appropriate reports.
• Provide credible testimony in court, administrative hearings and/or university proceedings.
• Operate a department vehicle in emergency and non-emergency situations.
• Perform other public safety, law enforcement or community policing duties as required.

Requirements

• Must be at least 21 years of age.
• Must be a US Citizen or a Naturalized US Citizen.
• Must possess a high school diploma or have passed the High School Equivalency Training Program (HiSET) which was formally known as the GED.
• Must be able to obtain a Massachusetts License to Carry Firearms (Class A Large Capacity) in accordance with Massachusetts General Law Chapter 140, Section 131.
• Must possess and demonstrate ethical behavior, emotional stability, sound judgment, integrity, and ability to accept responsibility for completing assigned duties.
• Current CPR and First Aid certifications are preferred but not required.
• Must have no prior felony record.
• Must possess a valid driver's license or be able to obtain a driver's license prior to hire.
• Successful completion of a Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) certified basic Police Recruit Academy (or have an approved MPTC waiver) and ability to obtain and retain Special State Police (SSPO) and Suffolk County Deputy Sheriff powers in accordance with MGL Chapter 22C, section 63.
• Ability to successfully complete training and show proficiency in the proper use of department issued weapons, police vehicles and equipment.
• Ability to obtain MA POST Commission Certification and SSPO Warrant of Appointment and pass a state and national background check pursuant to M.G.L. c. 6E, § 4 as a condition of employment.
• Possess excellent written and oral communication skills; strong ability to write clear and concise reports; the ability to organize and engage in problem solving activities; a strong commitment to prevention and the community policing philosophy.
• Protect and serve in a diverse community while exercising sound judgment and to take fair and impartial law enforcement actions that are free from bias.
• Thorough knowledge and understanding of police authority and jurisdiction, constitutional law, and criminal law and procedure.
• Prior to appointment, selected candidates will be required to pass a comprehensive background investigation, including drug testing and a comprehensive psychological evaluation.

Physical Activities/Work Environment

• Must be able to sit and stand for extended periods of time; must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, lift, carry, push, pull, climb and descend stairs, balance, walk, and run as needed.
• Must be able to access all facilities and areas of the campus on foot, to respond to emergencies or other calls for service, including the upper most floors of campus building when elevators are unavailable.
• Must be able to physically detain, lift, and push or pull a human being.
• Must be physically able to operate and communicate using a variety of machines and equipment including radios, telephones, batons, automobiles, office equipment, etc.
• Must be able to utilize human senses of sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell.
• Work environment includes exposure to unusual elements, such as severe weather or temperatures and loud noise.
• Must be able to work flexible hours including rotating shift assignments, nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Must be available for on-call assignments and overtime shifts as needed.
• Work environment includes exposure to hazards and physical risks to personal safety.
• Must be physically fit and able to defend community members and oneself from attack or physical assault.
• Must be able to walk for extended periods of time.
• Must be able to wear the required uniform.

Special Work Schedule Requirements

May be required to execute duties and responsibilities under life-threatening conditions. The position is considered an essential employee and as such is required to work in preparation for, during and immediately after regional emergencies impacting the university, and/or during emergencies directly impacting the university and/or the region; depending on shift assignment, may be required to work nights and weekends, required to work holidays; at times mandated to work overtime.
Police officers are required to successfully complete a structured Field Training Officer (FTO) program and complete training relative to the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission (MPAC) process, including training in ethics and integrity; harassment prevention; and the Department's mission, values, and goals, which are provided upon hire, promotion and annually and posted at all police stations on all campuses.
The Department is currently hiring for all shifts as well as part-time for the right candidates. We provide all the training and uniforms for this position.
