Job summary

Qualifications

• Minimum age 18, valid driver’s license, 60 college credits in police science or related field.
• Certified law enforcement officer or ability to obtain certification within 12 months of hire.
• Successful completion of FTO training within 12 months of hire.
• Prior experience or familiarity with law enforcement technology and reporting systems.

Responsibilities

• Patrol, enforcement of laws, respond to incidents, and provide first aid as needed.
• Respond to emergencies, take enforcement actions, and perform life-saving actions when warranted.
• Investigate crimes and traffic incidents; collect evidence and prepare reports.
• Make arrests, conduct searches, and secure crime scenes per procedures.
• Prepare incident reports, arrest records, and field notes for documentation.
• Serve civil process documents and provide court testimony as needed.
• Engage in community policing and participate in public safety events.
• Coordinate with other agencies and internal units to manage cases.
• Maintain readiness and operate department equipment and communications gear.

Job Summary

This position supports the County's public safety mission through enforcement of state, federal, and local laws. The role involves field-based law enforcement duties including patrol, investigation, emergency response, and public engagement. Patrol Deputies exercise independent judgment in routine and emergency situations to ensure community safety and uphold legal standards.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

1. Conducts vehicle patrols on assigned shifts to monitor public areas, enforce criminal, traffic and ordinance laws, and respond to incidents to include accidents, and provide first aid as needed.
2. Responds to emergency calls involving accidents, disturbances, criminal activity, and public safety concerns; takes appropriate enforcement actions, and or perform life‑saving actions.
3. Investigates crimes and traffic incidents by collecting evidence, interviewing witnesses, interrogating suspects, and preparing detailed reports.
4. Executes arrests, conducts searches, and secures crime scenes in compliance with legal procedures.
5. Prepares and submits investigative and procedural documentation such as incident reports, arrest records, and field notes.
6. Serves civil process documents and provides court testimony related to investigations and enforcement actions.
7. Engages in community policing by assisting citizens, promoting crime prevention, and participating in public safety events.
8. Coordinates with other law enforcement agencies, legal offices, and internal units to manage cases and uphold departmental policies.
9. Maintains readiness and communication through radio and mobile technology; uses department‑issued equipment responsibly.

Required Education & Experience

• At least 18 years of age.
• Valid driver’s license.
• At least sixty (60) college credits in police science, criminal justice or related field.
• Certified law enforcement officer per Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board, or obtained certification within 12 months of hire.
• Successful completion of Door County Sheriff’s Office Field Training Officer (FTO) training program within 12 months of hire.

Preferred Education & Experience

• Associate or Bachelor’s degree in police science, criminal justice, or related field from an accredited institution.
• Prior experience in law enforcement or public safety.
• Familiarity with law enforcement technology and reporting systems.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

The position requires frequent sitting, verbal and auditory communication. Occasional standing, walking, lifting (up to 60 pounds), reaching, climbing, kneeling, and crawling are required. Work involves exposure to various weather conditions and potential physical hazards. The role demands mental alertness, physical agility, and the ability to rapidly respond to emergencies and threats. The use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required.
