Job summary

Corewell Health's Taylor Hospital is seeking a part-time Patient Transport specialist. You will move patients to and from examinations, assist with transfers, and help keep equipment clean and ready for use.

The role emphasizes teamwork, safety, and courteous communication with patients and staff. Responsibilities include preparing patients for transport, verifying IDs, coordinating with care teams, and helping with discharge.

Qualifications

• Successful completion of three months of on-the-job-training.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• BLS (AHA, American Heart Association) or BLS (ARC, American Red Cross) within 90 days of hire.
• Understands and demonstrates safe lifting and transport techniques.
• Knows and practices Universal Precautions as appropriate.
• Demonstrated communication skills to interact with courtesy, tact, empathy, and professionalism in daily interaction with patients, their families, clinical licensed and non-licensed staff, physicians, and management.
• Ability to understand and follow directions, ability to comply with HIPAA confidentiality requirements.
• The ability to recognize if the patient is experiencing stress or other issues during transport and immediately seek assistance.
• Experience in patient transportation in an acute hospital environment.

Responsibilities

• Transports patients to and from examinations and treatments as part of the care team.
• Assists patients in and out of cars, beds, and transport equipment using wheelchairs, gurneys, or moveable beds.
• Prepares patients for transport and verifies proper identification before transport.
• Transports patients and equipment to testing and procedure areas including ICU and emergency.
• Communicates with medical staff to ensure required supplies and medications are transported with the patient, including oxygen when needed.
• Supports timely patient discharge and maintains safe, clean equipment and work areas.
• Follows unit safety competencies and participates in safety initiatives.
• Performs other duties as assigned by supervisors.

Job Summary

Transports all patient populations to and from examinations and treatments. Performs general errands and other routine duties including cleaning equipment, securing supplies, and other tasks as required. Acts as a team member in the delivery of quality patient care. Adheres to unit procedures wherever transport services rendered.

Essential Functions

• Practicing safe lifting and techniques, transports patients by assisting patients in and out of cars, lifting patients on and off beds, moving patients to and from special services and treatment areas using wheelchairs, gurneys, or moveable beds.
• Prepares patient for transport and performs passive and active identification to ensure all patients are properly identified before transporting.
• Transports all patients and equipment to and from testing and procedure areas including inpatient, outpatient, emergency and high risk Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
• Effectively communicates with medical employees to ensure all required medical supplies and medications are appropriately transported with the patient include the administering of oxygen when required.
• Responsible for the timely discharge of patients throughout the hospital.
• Under the direction of medical employees and/or Registered Nurse (RN), assists in providing support in toileting ambulatory patients.
• Cleans and disinfects equipment according to established policies and procedures. Maintains clean work areas and returns equipment to appropriate department. Communicates malfunctioning equipment/instruments to appropriate department/unit staff.
• Actively participates in safety initiatives and risk mitigating measures where appropriate and completes all position and unit safety related competencies and requirements on a timely basis.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
