Work Hours: Shift Varies
  • 1st shift: 10a-630p Monday-Friday
  • 2nd shift: 4p-1230a Monday-Friday
  • 3rd shift: 11p-7a Monday-Friday
  • Weekend: 8a-630p Saturday-Tuesday
Occupational Summary

Perform activities related to the transportation of patients, specimens, and equipment. Greet and assist patients and visitors at hospital and clinics as directed.

Work Performed
  • Transport patients to and from clinical, ancillary, and support areas via wheelchair, stretcher, or van service, including patients with oxygen tanks, IV pumps, and special equipment.
  • Assist clinical personnel in transferring patients to and from beds, wheelchairs, or stretchers.
  • Assist people in and out of vehicles; escort or transport them within hospital locations; carry luggage; open doors; arrange messenger services.
  • Approach, greet, and offer assistance and directions to hospital visitors.
  • Assist in loading and unloading patients onto ambulances and vans during periods of non-service.
  • Collect specimens, orders, requisitions, and equipment; deliver items to appropriate destinations.
  • Maintain order and cleanliness in hospital lobby and entrance areas.
  • Assist nursing staff with removal of expired bodies and transport to morgue.
  • Participate in training new employees.
  • Ensure proper patient identification before transportation.
  • Ensure equipment is clean and operational.
  • Transport to the OR, assist in room turnover, and verify OR packet signing.
  • Attend educational programs as directed.
  • Perform other related duties as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Requires good verbal communication skills, ability to follow instructions, physical exertion including walking, lifting, pushing, or pulling 100-200 pounds, operation of machines and equipment, and full range of motion. Ability to transport patients within hospital locations is required.

Minimum Qualifications

BCLS certification must be maintained or completed by the end of orientation; a valid North Carolina driver's license may also be required.
