Job summary

UVA Health is seeking a detail-oriented outpatient registrar to schedule and register patients, verify eligibility, and obtain pre-authorizations, referrals, and pre-certifications in collaboration with physician offices and related departments.

Ideal candidates will have strong customer service, insurance knowledge, and proficient computer skills. Prior medical office experience is preferred, with excellent communication abilities across teams.

Qualifications

  • 1 year of clerical experience in a medical office preferred.
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
  • Strong verbal and written communication and customer service skills.
  • Insurance knowledge relevant to processing authorizations and benefits.

Responsibilities

  • Schedules and registers patients for the outpatient clinic.
  • Verifies eligibility and ensures pre-auths, referrals, and pre-certifications are obtained.
  • Collaborates with physician offices, Utilization Review and Business Office.
  • Performs other job-related duties as directed by the Supervisor.

JOB SUMMARY

The following is a summary of the major essential functions of the job. The team member may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below; and specific functions may change from time to time:Schedules and registrars patients for the outpatient clinic. Verifies eligibility for patients and ensures all pre-authorizations, referrals, and pre-certifications are obtained as necessary by working closely with the physician offices, Utilization Review and Business Office Departments.Perform other job-related duties as directed by the Supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education:

High School Diploma or GED required.

Experience:

1 year of clerical experience in medical office setting required. Other related experience may be considered in lieu of medical office experience. Refer to the Life Support Training Policy for additional details.

Additional Skills/Requirements Required:

Knowledge of basic medical terminology. Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing and possess a high degree of excellent customer service skills. Background of insurance knowledge is required for certain tasks assigned. Ability to comprehend insurance cards and benefit details. Ability to deal directly with the public in a professional and empathetic manner.

Additional Skills/Requirements Preferred:

Background/knowledge of government/state and patient assistance programs is preferred. Working knowledge of ICD-10 and CPT coding is preferred. Strong computer skills. Proficiency in Windows and Microsoft Office preferred.

    • Answers all incoming telephone calls and provides accurate information as needed.

    • Facilitates and participates in regular staff meetings.

    • Accepts responsibility for actions and acts positively upon feedback from others.

The incumbent may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Physical Demand Code:

Medium to Heavy Physical Demand: The job requires constant standing, frequently walking, and bending/stooping. Proficient communicative, auditory, and visual skills. Attention to detail and ability to write legibly. Ability to lift/push/pull 100 lbs. For any weight over 35 lbs., use Safe Handling Equipment. The base compensation range for this role is $16.00 - $23.39 hourly.

Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education. Please note that the pay range does not include any applicable incentive compensation programs such as shift differentials, clinical ladders, and other incentives that may be available for those in eligible positions.
