Job summary

MedStar Health in Washington, DC, seeks a Patient Safety Program Manager to drive the implementation strategy and evaluation of patient safety initiatives across the organization. You will report to the Director of High Reliability and Quality Improvement and lead safety event reviews, education, and continuous improvement.

You will collaborate with senior leadership to identify system vulnerabilities, develop actions, and advance high reliability principles to improve patient safety culture.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing or healthcare related field required.
  • Master's degree in Nursing or healthcare related field preferred.
  • Clinical Experience/knowledge preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead patient safety programs across departments that align with organizational goals and processes.
  • Mentor patient safety coordinator and provide feedback on event reviews and safety improvement projects.
  • Conduct and oversee safety-related proactive risk assessments and root cause analysis.
  • Monitor trends from safety event report systems and develop action plans based on analytics.
  • Develop and track reports related to key patient safety metrics.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership and frontline associates to identify system vulnerabilities and innovative solutions.
  • Represent the organization in external safety collaboratives and stay aware of best practices and trends.
  • Provide guidance and training on use of the patient safety event reporting system.
  • Lead the Serious Safety Event Review Process and oversee action planning.
  • Collaborate with Risk Management to maintain quality and safety standards.

About the Job
General Summary of Position

The Patient Safety Program Manager leads the implementation strategy and evaluation of patient safety initiatives within the organization. Reporting to the Director of High Reliability and Quality Improvement this position will lead safety-related strategies aimed at reducing preventable harm, supporting high-reliability principles, and fostering innovative approaches that positively impact the culture of safety. The Patient Safety Program Manager provides leadership in safety event reviews and safety education.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead patient safety programs across departments that align with organizational goals and processes. Provide training and onboarding support for new associates.
  • Mentor patient safety coordinator provide feedback on event reviews and safety improvement projects.
  • Conduct and oversee safety-related proactive risk assessments and root cause analysis
  • Monitor trends from safety event report systems develop action plans based on analytics.
  • Develop and track reports related to key patient safety metrics.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership departmental leaders and frontline associates to identify system vulnerabilities and innovative solutions
  • Represent the organization in external safety collaboratives maintain awareness of best practices and trends in patient safety.
  • Provides guidance training and insight to associates on use of the patient safety event reporting system.
  • Lead the Serious Safety Event Review Process following the MSH event review process. Evaluate changes in processes and maintains oversight of action planning as indicated.
  • Collaborate with Risk Management office to maintain appropriate quality and safety standards.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area. The above responsibilities are a general description of the level and nature of the work assigned to this classification and is not considered to be all inclusive.
Minimal Qualifications
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing or healthcare related field required.
  • Master's degree in Nursing or healthcare related field preferred.
  • Clinical Experience/knowledge preferred.
Experience
  • 5-7 years in health care setting with at least 3 of those in patient safety, quality improvement, or risk management required. Consideration will be given to appropriate combination of training and experience.
  • Experience in acute care facilities preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS) Certified Professional Patient Safety (CPPS) within 1 Year required or
  • CPHQ - Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of safety science human factors engineering and high reliability principles
  • Proven leadership and team-building skills excellent communication and facilitation abilities.
  • Ability to solve problems in a complex and dynamic organization
  • Strong familiarity with event reporting systems (e.g. RLDatis) J

This position has a hiring range of USD $82,617.00 - USD $157,352.00 /Yr.
