Job summary

Southern Illinois Healthcare is seeking a dedicated patient observer to provide direct observation of patients under the nursing plan of care and nursing supervision, reporting changes to the staff, and interacting with diverse populations in stressful trauma and mental health situations.

The role emphasizes maintaining logs, clear handoffs, de-escalation when needed, and staying with patients in restrooms with visual contact, while keeping all required trainings (LMS, CPR, CPI) up to date.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Previous CNA or mental health-related experience preferred.
• Experience in trauma or behavioral health settings is beneficial.

Responsibilities

• Provides close observation of patients.
• Communicates with nursing staff to understand patient parameters.
• Maintains and documents logs and records.
• Remains with patient while in bathroom; always keeping a clear visual.
• Check that all suicide/mental health rooms are clear of any unnecessary medical equipment.
• Provides a proper handoff to another staff member, completed in the presence of the patient, when patient sitters must leave the patient.
• Able to use behavior management strategies to de-escalate agitated patients.
• Must be able to listen to patient’s worries, so patient sitters need to be comfortable listening and responding, while always maintaining a professional approach.
• Keeps LMS education, CPR, CPI, and other required educations up to date.
