Job summary

San Antonio Community Hospital is seeking a Financial Counselor to secure reimbursements from insurers, patients, and other parties. The role involves explaining insurance coverage and patient liability, determining eligibility, calculating benefits, and collecting liabilities.

The ideal candidate will discuss payment plans, postponed payments, Medi-Cal and Financial Assistance programs as needed. Requirements include a minimum high school diploma or GED and at least two years in medical billing

Qualifications

• Education: Minimum of High School Diploma or GED required.
• Experience: Two years previous work-related experience in medical billing, hospital registration, physician front office or hospital financial counseling setting with insurance verification, collections and/or billing required.
• Knowledge and Skills: Attention to detail, excellent verbal and written communication skills with an ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with staff, patients/guarantors, insurance companies, physicians and all others. Ability to follow directions as outlined and comprehends complex issues. Good English speaking skills, spelling, reading and mathematical skills. Strong computer skills. Ability to work independently and exercise independent judgment at times of need. Bilingual preferred.

Responsibilities

• The Financial Counselor ensures reimbursement is secured for San Antonio from insurance, patients or other responsible parties.
• Assists patients in understanding their health care insurance coverage and patient liability by determining eligibility, benefits, authorization, utilization requirements and expected reimbursement amounts.
• Processes patient registration information, ensures accuracy of all data and requirements and collects patient liabilities as applicable.
• Discusses patient liabilities and other programs and assistance such as postponed payments, payment plans, Medi-Cal and the San Antonio Financial Assistance program.
