Job summary

St. Luke’s Health – Memorial Lufkin seeks a Patient Companion to join our healthcare team, reporting to a Registered Nurse. You will oversee assigned patients daily, supporting personal hygiene, mobility, and comfort while monitoring their physical and emotional condition.

Ideal candidates are compassionate, calm under pressure, and able to respond to patients who may be emotional or in pain. You will work under supervision to ensure safety and dignity across all duties.

Qualifications

• Compassionate, patient-focused demeanor with ability to interact with distressed patients.
• CPR/BLS certification within 14 days of hire if required.
• Experience in healthcare environment is beneficial but not required.

Responsibilities

• Maintains patient safety for patients at risk for self harm or falls and handles tubes and lines with care.
• Protects patient dignity at all times.
• Contacts nursing staff immediately with any concerns about patient condition.
• Ensures coverage of duties during breaks or lunch periods.
• Provides comfort measures such as blankets, pillows, and patient positioning.
• Prepares patients for meals, assists feeding, and verifies fluid intake with nursing staff.

Job Summary and Responsibilities

As our Patient Companion, you will be a vital member of our healthcare team, dedicated to optimizing patient safety and well-being. You will be part of our highly specialized team of patient caregivers, working under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.

Every day, you will maintain continuous oversight of assigned patients, directly assisting with their personal hygiene, mobility, and requests, while diligently monitoring their physical and emotional condition.

To be successful in this role, you must be compassionate and comfortable interacting with patients who might be emotional, panicked, stressed, or in pain. While performing duties under various circumstances, you will be eager to work calmly and efficiently to respond to situations, ensuring the best possible outcome for the patient.

• Maintains patient safety for patients at risk for self harm including but not limited to those on suicide precautions, those at risk for falls, or to keep medical tubes and lines intact.
• Protects the patient's dignity at all times.
• Contacts nursing staff immediately of any concern regarding the patient's condition.
• Ensures coverage of duties during all periods of relief, i.e., breaks or lunch.
• Provides comfort measures, i.e., blanket, pillow, positioning.
• Prepares patient for meals, feeds patient and offers fluids as appropriate and verifies with nursing staff.

Job Requirements

• High School Graduate or GED
• Basic Life Support - CPR, within 14 - days
