Thank you for considering joining the Tucson Medical Center patient care team! We are committed to providing exceptional patient care and developing our staff. Our training program is designed for individuals without hospital-based healthcare experience, guiding them through a step-wise process to achieve Patient Care Technician (PCT) status.
The program is a ten-week training course that prepares you to work as a PCT alongside RNs, performing tasks such as taking vital signs, assisting with daily activities, and maintaining patient hygiene. A video overview of PCT responsibilities is available for more information.
The initial eight weeks include classroom and skills lab training, led by the TMC Clinical Education team at various campus locations. Week 3 involves clinical practice on a TMC unit to apply learned skills in a real-world setting. Week 4 combines clinical practice with additional classroom sessions, culminating in a final written exam and skills assessment. Weeks 5-8 focus on transition to practice through preceptorship, and weeks 9-10 involve validation by an RN.
Candidates must be available between 8:00 am and 4:30 pm for training. After completing the program, shifts will be assigned on days or nights, with a 12-hour shift schedule. All candidates are required to sign a one-year contract. The interview process includes a unit shadowing experience.
