General Summary
Under the direction of professional nursing staff, provides direct patient care. Takes vital signs, checks surgical dressings, aids patients with activities of daily living. Performs blood draws and collects specimen samples. Observes and collects data, communicates patient status to identify needs and provide care. Serves as a member of the interdisciplinary patient care team.
Principal Responsibilities and Tasks
The following describes the general nature and level of work for this role. It is not an exhaustive list of all duties.
- Performs testing and manages patient care based on results and clinical findings.
- Records patient care activities, including ADLs: feeding, bathing, dressing, toileting, transferring.
- Documents vital signs (temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiration, oxygen saturation, pain levels).
- Assists with patient admission, transfer, and discharge.
- Participates in cost-effective strategies to optimize outcomes.
- Promotes patient safety, including fall prevention, and ensures a safe environment.
- Maintains order and appearance of patient rooms and work areas; manages supplies and linens.
- Provides post-mortem care.
- Collaborates with healthcare team to implement the care plan, reporting changes.
- Ensures patient comfort and manages pain.
- Measures and documents urinary and stool output, calorie count, and weight.
- Assists with urinary catheter care, including insertion, maintenance, removal, and documentation.
- Performs blood glucose monitoring.
- Performs venipuncture and establishes IV access.
- Performs nasal swabs.
- Prepares equipment and initiates IV placement as directed.
- Operates EKG machines, attaches leads, and records rhythm strips.
- Assists with enteral feedings via nasogastric or gastrostomy tubes.
- Performs chest physiotherapy, tracheal suctioning, tracheostomy care, and incentive spirometry as delegated.
- Assists with dressing changes and wound care, reports skin integrity issues.
- Collects laboratory specimens using proper techniques.
- Provides orthopedic/rehab device care and manages compression wraps/stockings.
- Mentors and precepts PCTs and manages documentation.
- Participates in hourly patient rounding.
- Responds to patient alarms promptly.
- Follows safety protocols and reports adverse events.
- Maintains vigilance in patient safety, including when acting as a safety companion.
- Uses safe lifting techniques and body mechanics.
- Improves patient flow and prevents delays.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
