PURPOSE AND SCOPE:
Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. Responsible for the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe and clean environment, and supporting quality improvement activities to meet organizational goals.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Patient Related
- Assist in providing patient education on adequacy measures and disease process.
- Evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, administer heparin, and monitor patient response.
- Record vital signs, weight, and treatment parameters accurately.
- Initiate and discontinue dialysis treatments following prescribed protocols.
- Monitor and respond to intradialytic problems; document interventions and patient responses.
- Ensure all treatment documentation is complete and accurate.
- Report significant changes in patient condition to the nurse or supervisor.
- Assist in maintaining infection control standards and prepare lab specimens.
Staff and Education
- Assist in training direct care staff under supervision.
- Maintain a safe, clean environment and ensure all equipment is disinfected and prepared for use.
Record Keeping
- Participate in CQI activities and document treatment data accurately.
- Prepare patient charts and lab requisitions, and ensure proper specimen handling.
Infection Control and Transitional Care
- Support infection control policies and participate in audits.
- Assist with transitional care for new patients, including education and coordination.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
- Perform physical tasks such as lifting, pushing, and prolonged standing, with accommodations as needed.
Education and Licenses
- High school diploma or G.E.D. required; certification and licensure as per state and CMS requirements.
Experience and Skills
- Previous patient care experience preferred; successful completion of dialysis training and CPR certification required.
