Job description

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with organizational policies, procedures, training, and compliance with regulations set forth by relevant authorities. Responsible for setting up and operating hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe and clean environment, and supporting quality improvement initiatives such as the QEP and CQI activities, including patient satisfaction and process improvements.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

Patient Related

Education :

• Assist healthcare team members in providing patient-specific education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access.

Treatment :

• Welcome patients, assess wellbeing, evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, administer heparin as delegated, and obtain vital signs and weight pre- and post-treatment.
• Initiate and discontinue dialysis per prescribed orders, monitor patient response, and document all relevant data accurately.
• Ensure safety alarms are enabled, conduct safety checks, and report any issues or abnormal findings to the nurse or supervisor.
• Perform laboratory specimen collection, prepare specimens, and ensure proper infection control measures.

Staff Related

• Assist in training direct care staff under supervision of a nurse.

Education / Communication :

• Follow organizational policies, maintain a safe and clean environment, and prepare equipment for treatment, including alarm testing and SDS initiation.

Record Keeping :

• Participate in CQI activities, document treatment data accurately, review treatment sheets for completeness, and prepare patient charts and lab requisitions.

Infection Control :

• Support infection control practices, participate in audits, and educate patients and families as permitted by law.

Transitional Care Unit :

• Support new patients through their first 4 weeks of dialysis, reinforce education, coordinate care, and assist with supply management.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions :

• Perform tasks in a healthcare environment, including lifting, standing, and bending, with accommodations as needed. May require travel between facilities and exposure to infectious materials.

Education and Licenses :

• High School diploma or G.E.D., with required state or national certification, licensure, and training.

Experience and Skills :

• Preferred prior patient care experience; successful completion of dialysis training and CPR certification required.
