Purpose and Scope:

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with policies, procedures, and regulations. Responsible for operating hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe environment, and supporting quality improvement activities.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Patient Related Education:
  • Assist in providing patient-specific education regarding adequacy measures and disease process.
Treatment:
  • Welcome patients, evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, administer heparin, obtain vital signs, initiate and monitor dialysis, evaluate patient response, and document all procedures accurately.
Staff Related:
  • Assist in training staff on care protocols.
Education/Communication:
  • Follow policies, maintain a clean environment, prepare equipment, and ensure safety protocols are followed.
Record Keeping:
  • Participate in CQI activities, ensure accurate data entry, and prepare patient documentation.
Infection Control:
  • Support infection control practices, participate in audits, and educate patients and families.
Transitional Care Unit:
  • Support new patients through their first 4 weeks, coordinate care, and educate about treatment options.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

Includes lifting, standing, bending, and exposure to infectious diseases, with accommodations available for disabilities.

Education and Licenses:
  • High School diploma or G.E.D., CMS-approved certification, state licensure, and commitment to organizational values.
Experience and Skills:
  • Preferred hospital or related care experience; successful completion of dialysis training and CPR certification required.
