PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

Functions as part of the dialysis healthcare team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with policies, procedures, and regulations. Responsible for setup and operation of hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe environment, and supporting quality improvement activities.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Patient Related

Education:

  • Assist in providing patient-specific education regarding dialysis adequacy measures and disease process.

Treatment:

  • Welcome patients, evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, administer heparin, and monitor vital signs and weight pre- and post-treatment.
  • Initiate, monitor, and terminate dialysis treatments, record parameters, and respond to intradialytic problems.
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled, document treatment details, and report significant changes to the nurse or supervisor.
  • Maintain cleanliness and prepare supplies, assist with blood draws, and support patient self-care under supervision.

Staff Related

  • Assist in training staff on appropriate programs under supervision of a nurse.

Infection Control:

  • Support infection control practices, participate in audits, and reinforce patient education on infection prevention.

TRANSITIONAL CARE UNIT:

  • Follow new patients through their first 4 weeks, coordinate care, and support patient understanding of treatment options.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Requires physical ability to lift and move patients, stand for prolonged periods, and perform bending and pushing/pulling tasks. Travel between facilities may be required. Work environment involves exposure to infectious materials.
EDUCATION AND LICENSES:
  • High School diploma or G.E.D. required.
  • Must meet state and/or national certification requirements within specified timelines.
  • All relevant licensure, education, and training as required.
EXPERIENCE AND REQUIRED SKILLS
  • Previous patient care experience preferred.
  • Successful completion of dialysis training and CPR certification required for continued employment.
