Job description

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team to provide safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. Responsible for setting up and operating hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe and clean environment, and supporting quality improvement activities. Complies with organizational policies, procedures, and regulations from federal, state, and local agencies.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Patient Related:

  • Assist in providing patient education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access.
  • Evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, administer heparin as delegated, and monitor vital signs and weight pre- and post-treatment.
  • Initiate and discontinue dialysis treatment according to prescribed orders, monitor patient response, and document all relevant information.
  • Ensure safety alarms are active, perform safety checks, and respond to any patient or machine issues.
  • Prepare laboratory specimens and maintain infection control practices.

Staff Related:

  • Assist in training other care staff under supervision of a nurse.

Education/Communication:

  • Follow organizational policies, maintain a safe environment, and ensure cleanliness of equipment and surroundings.
  • Participate in preparation and alarm testing of dialysis machines.

Record Keeping:

  • Document participation in CQI activities, treatment data, and ensure completeness and signatures on treatment sheets.
  • Prepare charts, lab requisitions, and handle lab specimens appropriately.

Infection Control:

  • Support infection control practices, participate in audits, and educate patients and families.

Transitional Care Unit:

  • Follow new patients through their first 4 weeks of dialysis, coordinate care, and support patient understanding of treatment options.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

  • Require ability to perform heavy lifting, prolonged standing, and assist with patient ambulation. Must pass Ishihara’s Color Blindness test.

Education and Licenses:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. required.
  • Must meet state or CMS certification and licensure requirements.

Experience and Skills:

  • Previous patient care experience preferred. Successful completion of dialysis training and CPR certification required.
